I was wondering how fussy you were going to be. I wouldn't hire someone for that position if their resume was too "polished". I presume you would like them to stay longer than a week?

Anyone willing to do it valiantly would have to be a strong contender.

We actually are getting a good number of applications from Grad students who dont have the time for a better job, and can't speak french because they are only here to attend McGill. They have excellent CVs, but their options are limited to call centers (which require more hours, usually) and dishwashing jobs

I called Bingo while at uni.

Short shifts and decent "under the table" pay.

So you mean it wasn't an acheivement when I got my second real job (not including paper routes+mowing+janitorial work + college work) as a dishwasher (after my first year of college)?

Couldn't they just work at repressing the French people like all the other Anglos in Quebec, or does that require long hours as well?

To be fair, basically saying that you apply because it's a job usually doesn't work well either. These days you already need a motivation and qualifications to flip burgers at McDonalds.

I had a hard job finding a job anywhere the summer I took a dishwashing job.

When I was in college, I started working at a resturant as a dishwasher. Within a year I had bussed, waited, cooked, and played host. So seemingly over qualified shouldn't be an issue.

And actually my first manager there taught me my favorite leadership skill. He came in one day, rolled up his sleeves opened the grease trap and cleaned it. When he finished he asked, "any questions?, since next time you're doing it". It was the most disgusting task in the place, but I knew there was no way I was going to be able to refuse or ***** about having to do it since he had done it in front of me. I was actually dumb enough at the time to take pride in doing it. What a lesson.

I was pretty bad at dishwashing to be honest. One of the worst they had... I was just too slow.

This was at a pancake house so we had to deal with dried egg yokes and syrup. But I had a high tolerance for hot water so I wasn't bad at it.

It's not that bad of a job if you're a student because people have a tendency to leave you alone if you show any amount of aptitude towards it. (which isn't that hard)

I did it at a pizza place (and they did other stuff also). The grease/etc removal was difficult at times... also, I think it was completely unsanitary in the back there. I was surprised that people didn't get sick eating there. The shoes that I wore to work there got completely messed up and couldn't be worn for anything else... and I would always stink when I got home.

I left a pair of old gym shoes there that I used exclusively when I washed. They were useless for anything else.
Sanitary was an effort, but worth it.

We have a boss who's much the same. He came up through the restaurant system the long and hard way, starting as a dishwasher. He's willing to do any job on any night, and he expects us to be the same. He's not a hardass either, so people find it hard to say no to him.
