The only reason he didn't get absolutely raped in the election is that your media completely failed to hold him to account, and that the average voter is a moron.
What can I say? You do high moral dungeon like true grande dame, but you know jack sh*t about the American political process.

More than most people on here, who predicted Shrub would be out.

But, as usual, this is supposed to count as a refutation from you.

As for the American political process. The candidates are a joke. The institutions are a joke. The constitution is antiquated and silly. The electoral process is a joke. And the result is usually a joke.

I'm sorry you lot have no idea how to organize a country. It wouldn't be so bad if you weren't trying to spread the incompetence to other countries, but that's another story.

There's always stupidity in politics. The trick is to minimize it. Look north for a people who have greater domestic problems than you (the French want to leave, and the prairie folk are always pissed) and yet manage to make politics work with minimum stupidity.

That might be troublesome if I thought the election were to be close. I don't think it's going to be.

Far too optimistic. This is going to be a close election. If the Republican nominee was anyone but McCain, I'd agree that it'd be a blowout... but McCain, regardless of his myriad problems, has a LOT going for him that other Republican potential nominees didn't (for example, McCain is a master at working the press and does have in his past a streak of working with the other side of the aisle).

Why people believe in democracy is beyond me. I mean it works in smaller countries like Sweden and New Zealand, and works quite well in Canada. But it's an absolute joke in the US and UK and many other countries.
Yes because we elect sensible and civilized people like Stephen Harper.

Because, for all the faults of the people (and they are many), the faults of despots, aristocrats, oligarchs, etc. have displayed themselves to be worse.

But you know this. Troll on, good sir.

Canada having more internal problems... heh. I don't envy having to deal with the French, but I think I'd trade the legacy of slavery for it...

Yesterday, a Dem won a 49% plurality (if you add his number to the other Dem, it's a majority - it'll go to a runoff now) in a congressional district that Bush won by >20%. I'm not worried.

People forget how badly McCain was doing in the polls before he became the presumptive nominee.

We had slavery as well. It didn't take us quite so long to do away with it however.

Why are votes like yesterday mostly (if not always) weekdays. Is that a plot to keep the working class from voting??

The polling stations are open such that you can vote before or after work.

To your credit, of course. You didn't take the opportunity to do away with the French, though.

There is no way turnout would be as high on the weekend.

especially on a saturday or sunday in november.

plus a lot of religionists would be upset

Polls are open quite long here, and my jurisdiction, at least, allows for voting at least a week a head of time.

                              Key tip about US:

                              Fridays: HS football
                              Saturdays: College Football
                              Sundays: NFL football

Don't plan on getting a large amt of the population to do anything on a fall weekend.

Employers here are required by law to allow their employees time to vote.
