Yet somehow I have a large circle of friends and a wife.

pardon me for asking, KrazyHorse, but if you don't mind me asking, what's your opinion of religion or spirituality for that matter

sorry if this doesn't sound relevant to the topic at all, but i'm just curious
I'm neither religious nor spiritual. I do not have a generally unfavourable view of people who are religious, but I've personally never felt that there was anything more to religion or spirituality than wishful thinking.

      • In my mind string theory is about one step removed from religion anyway.

The other main problem is that "string theory" is actually a set of 10^500 theories which all look pretty much the same.

Dunno about that. God doesn't seem to do what I ask him for.

He doesn't seem to want to strike down my enemies.

PH: I get the impression you're easily annoyed, though. KH thumps his chest over his area of expertise, but then so do Asher (with computers), Starchild (biochemistry), and I imagine Blake would if anyone but him ever raised the subject of Buddhism.

              • Generally physicists do not name particles after physicists. The lone exception is the Higgs boson.

Fermions (Enrico Fermi) and Bosons (Bose) are classes of particles named after physicists.

In general physicists choose whimsical or descriptive names for particles.

Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

                  • I've said it before: when somebody asks me a genuine question I'm more than willing to answer them civilly and without talking down to them. In fact, I've done so a number of times in this thread already.

When somebody approaches me in an argumentative manner or blindly contradicts me without the benefit of 10 years of education and active research in the subject then I will tee off on them every single time.

I have absolutely no problem with ignorance. People who are unwilling to accept that they are ignorant, on the other hand, are one of my pet peeves. Especially when the subject is physics, since we seem to get more than our fair share of cranks with the inability to listen to those who know better than them.

                      • You embody everything that pissed me off about academia and one of the reasons I left

I thought you left because your research failed horribly and they demoted you.

I tell people I'm trying to develop a bomb that will kill everybody in the entire Universe.

Well, in a sense, killing every living thing would be a cure for cancer. That's outside the box thinking!
