    • Zkribbler,

I don't see why you should have to get a credential just to teach your own children when you are already teaching them well.

      • Thanks Kid!

That's the point I was trying to get at.

Homeschool kids are succeeding. They need to fix the public school system.

That's why, a few days ago, I suggested giving provisional credentials to parent who demonstate that they are proficient in the subjects they will be teaching.

And all you folks hollering about the horrors of sending these kids to public schools -- this case came about because kids enrolled in private schools were attending and the private schools were lying to cover this up.

California has lots of options other than public schools.

By proficient I hope you mean that their student kids are succeeding. If so I agree.

Private schools cost money, as much as college in many cases.

Because this thread is all about anecdotals. After all, we have personal experiences showing home schooling successes and public school failures. Some evidenced in this very thread.

                  • Regarding standards, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island all have requirements that students pass tests in order to continue to be home schooled. If California is concerned about the quality of education received by home schoolers, would this be better for California than requiring that all home school teachers be credentialed?

Regarding teacher's unions, I think the webpage of the National Education Association (essentially national teachers union) makes their view pretty clear..."Great public schools for every child" (my emphasis)

Annecdotally, my sister in law (Rhode Island) home schooled her five children in part because they all had mild learning disabilities and she could not get appropriate resources in the local school district. She has no credentials whatsoever, but could provide each child with individual attention. The oldest child is in law school, the next two in college, and the two youngest still being home schooled. It was lots of work, but they seemed to do alright.

My college roommate (Massachusetts) home schooled his three children because he felt that the local (pretty good) school district was not good enough. He, too, had no credentials, but could provide each child with individual attention. He caught a lot of flak from the People's Republic of Massachusetts.... until his oldest child when to Princeton.

I think this is an excellent solution that rewards hard work and good teaching. The kids do well = no problems. The kids struggling = problems.

For 13 straight years and then four more in college? More likely is that most of the schools are pretty damn good but the few exceptions (LA, Oakland) are very bad and very large so they weight down the averages.

Everyone knows college is a different matter. Don't be an idiot. And yes, depending on where your parents lived would be a strong factor.

I also went only to public schools, and in NYC at that!(the horrors!), and somehow ended up graduating with honors from a fancy top private university!

I would assume most people posting here are not home schooled, and I would even guess that the majority of the American posters went to public shool. Somehow most people managed to survive the terror.

I know you have difficulty reading English so I will break it down for you. 30%-40% of the total state wide student population resides in greater LA (Greater LA has a total population of around 18 million out of a state wide population of 32 million but those 18 million tend to be younger immigrants who have more kids thus there are more kids per capita then in the rest of the state) so one, very big, bad apple ruins the whole state average. The rest of the state tends to have fairly good scores other then a few inner city exceptions (Oakland for example) so outside of LA and the like the schools remain very good to great.
