You ever been to a school in California, Jon? I went to them for 13 years then went to a state university and I can honestly say the schools were great. Something like 80% of my graduating class went to college many, like me, to difficult to get into colleges.

Maybe you lucked out?
I thought that people posted that Cali schools weren't good.
My experience with public school (Oregon) is that 40% graduate and 4 years after that only ~5% of those that graduated highschool graduated college (others had went, but failed out). No one (not even myself) went to a great school, although my school was good.

Dooming 100k of kids to a ****ty education when they were getting a good one (the vast majority of homeschool educations are good ones, in california, the same can't be said about public school educations)

California is still 10 points below the country average. Homeschooled students score 10-20 points above the national average.
Why are you cheering dooms 1000s of students to a piss poor educaiton?

California schools are very bad because of California. California has changed very much over the last few decades. They don't care about education as much, at least not most of them.

There really is no state standard so you have to compare district by district. Some of which are among the best in the country (San Jose, Poway, Ranch Santa Fe) and some suck (LA, Oakland, etc...) virtually every district has magnet schools in them though which get high ratings and which are free to parents.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Pet Wilson, the former Republican governor, made it his signature issue to eliminate most state standards because he wanted to "push it down to the local level". He cut the school districts free to decide for themselves and many, maybe a majority, just decided to have no standards at all. It's what you call a failure of over site which is the main problem with most Republican ideals.

The persistent drive to underfund education and underpay teachers also adds to the problem.
But all this law does is require children to be taught by someone who is qualified to teach. Why are you against that?

No, this law requires children to be taught by someone that has been certified as qualified to teach. Not just that - certified as qualified to teach an entire classroom full of students. That's very, very distant from "qualified to teach your own child."

Basically, it means that they would have to be such that they could be working at the local public school.
Why not just focus on the small percent of time that homeschool fails (less then 25% of the time) rather then forcing every parent who wishes to homeschool their kids to treat it like a full time job. This would be far better then force the 1000s of homeschooled kids into the public school system which fails 40+% of the time.
