California court strikes a blow for children; homeschooling virtually outlawed.

So in essence this entire thread is nothing more than an affirmation of teacher unions and accreditation. :barf:
I'm afraid so, Ogie. This may stick in California, however. I bet it wouldn't stand in most other states.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

This case didn't go to court because competency was found lacking. Rather, private schools had been submitting false atendance reports indicating that students who were being homeschooled were attending these private schoolss. Once caught, their argument was that the law requiring childen be taught by credential teachers and/or tutors was unconstitutional because parents have a constitutional right to homeschool their children. The Court found no such right in the Constitution.
Do you have a link to that? Would be interested in reading it.
The portion of the article I was refering to:
The Long family legal battle didn't start out as a test case on the validity of homeschooling. It was a child welfare case.
A juvenile court judge looking into one child's complaint of mistreatment by Philip Long found that the children were being poorly educated but refused to order two of the children, ages 7 and 9, to be enrolled in a full-time school. He said parents in California have a right to educate their children at home.
The appeals court told the juvenile court judge to require the parents to comply with the law by enrolling their children in a school, but excluded the Sunland Christian School from enrolling the children because that institution "was willing to participate in the deprivation of the children's right to a legal education."

What points?
Home schooling is a non-issue when it comes to providing education to tens of millions of citizens because it is not a viable method to provide education to the masses.
A better question is why so many other countries have effective public education and yet the US continues to fail.

It's not outlawed as has been said several times in this thread. A parent would just have to get a teaching credential in each age category. Overall credential 2 year (comes with one age category) plus one year extra for each additional age category (there are 4 categories, pre-school, elementary, middle, high).
...so a parent would need a total of five years of training to be allowed to educate his/her child all the way through? In addition to the income lost by staying home to teach the child instead of going out and working in the first place? Is that all?
Honestly, do you not see the problem with this perspective?
Oh, and whoever made the Nazi comparison, I believe Arnie has spoken out quite vehemently against this ruling. Be fair.
I remember Anna Rosanna Dana saying it was wrong to "bust" children.
wrt the topic - Can I safely assume CA teachers are unionized? I see a teacher union involved in this and I know the kid's best interests are NEVER what these groups have in mind.
I missed that one.

Yes, those evil teachers. Working long hours for junk pay but heaps of abuse. They obviously never think of the children.
I tried to find it on YouTube but couldn't find it.
She was quite irate that we would be busting children. Of course when informed of her error "Oh, that's different. Nevermind then."

Why is it that most of the rest of the world does not have these stupid problems with education? Why is it that in many places in the world, including many poor countries with neglegible resources compared to the US public education actually works well enough to get their kids to read and do math? Why is it so hard to make American children monolingual while so many other states can make their children multilingual?
Is this level of stupidity reserved specifically to the US and to a much lesser extent Canada?
Because in America any idiot's opinion is valid and can be treated as fact. With so many "facts" that often conflict, Americans haven't a clue what to do about anything.

Read what I wrote and then reread your answer.
edit: I'll even give you a clue. My mom was a teacher for 25+ years.
