I'm not sure how the military uses it's physicians, but it's highly unlikely they pay for her specialized training in anesthesiology, then make her a field medic. (I'm sure one of our soldiers will correct me there if I'm wrong.) The closest she'd get to combat would be a field hospital or some such, and probably much more likely she'd be in Germany or the States.

I'm sure, as an anesthesiologist, she'd argue that by assisting in surgery performed on wounded soldiers she would be contributing to the war effort by patching them up so they could go kill some more. But, I agree with most others that it's extremely weak. Surely there could be some role that she could fulfill that would not conflict with her religious beliefs. Working in a rehab hospital or pain clinic stateside for example. (I'm not sure if those services exist for vets no longer on combat duty, if they don't, they certainly should.)

I agree. Clearly she should have to fulfill an obligation to satisfy her debt. I have no problem with it being in a non-combat related situation. There shoulkd be plenty of those available.

Can't you pay someone $300 to go in your place? Or was that Civil War?

I guess she doesn't have to pay taxes either

I had an uncle who did the same thing worst decision he ever made.

He was a navy man and when they finished training him, he left the navy. They never asked for the money back from him, but the problem was for him is that he liked being out to sea, and ended up going back. The Navy wouldn't take him and he took a job with a civilian transport.

I don't see what the issue is for a doctor here, most pacifists, including the mennonites see doctors and non-combat roles as an effective way to serve their country and respect their religious beliefs. During conscription, they took special care to find non-combat roles for them reflecting whatever talents they had.

Is it possible for her to declare bankruptcy to get out of them?

Like I said -- it's extremely weak. It shouldn't get her out of her contract much less her tax payments.

Eh, just out of spite the Army should assigned her to a labor battalion digging holes and filling them in, for all eight years (if the ruling went the other way).

Or better yet cleaning latrines. The army has lots and lots of latrines

Well, of course... but its harder to declare bankruptcy these days... especially for, say, a doctor.
