i hope they want do the "let's just to another timeline and everyone is now alive" thing. i think so far their time (science) fiction is that everything in the end states the same (universe correcting etc).

that said, i have no clue on what going back serves. what is the "terrible thing" that happened?

My guess is that the 6 were part of the destiny to protect the island from Widmore, and without them his forces prevail. It doesn't appear that way from Widmore's meeting with Sun but since we know that the natives are able to time travel (through Alpert and others) on a controlled basis the Locke we saw could easily be from the future.

Wait Spike---how do we know the natives are able to time travel?

So far, we've seen Desmond become uncontrollably unstuck in time, and we've seen Ben jump ahead when he moved the island. We haven't seen anyone else time travel. Current speculation is that Alpert, for some reason, does not age.

My interpretation was that he travelled in time - but I'm sure there could be others (no pun inteneded).
