Throwing out words like 'thermodynamics' for no reason in conversation makes you look about as smart as JJ Abrams when he infuses his gay shows with characters like John Locke and Hugo Reyes. You are like a hamster to my newt, endlessly spinning around in one of those windmill toys parents buy to entertain their children.

FACE FACTS: The writers, as usual, got themselves into an impossible position (the bomb will go off and the people on the boat won't know) and got out of it by giving the characters a lame way to both know when the bomb was triggered (big red lights are so 1990s), and a lame way to avoid its detonation (straight from McGayver).

I hope in the next episode we get a Hurly-Jin's corpse sex scene, just to ratchet up the plausibility factor of this atrocious, meaningless, pretentious show.

My only question was, they showed the bomb on the ship. Why didn't they think to just remove the quite obvious antenna so it couldn't receive the detonation? signal.
Did it work by the lack of a signal (eg, no heartbeat = no signal) or did it send out the signal to blow up?

      • It'd seem that it was no hearbeat = send signal. We should probably assume that the antenna was also using redundant wiring where attempts to disconnect, as Des says, mean boom.

        • pretty good episode(s), but i'm not as thrilled anymore about the "we have to go back" plot. probably because we've already heard about this, well, last season.

what other hint did we get for this plot? some bad things happened. locke looks to be dead. ben is doing his usual manipulations.

perhaps after finally seeing the 6(+des) leaving the island something about the series was... lost

How did it manage to send a signal from the deep underground lair of the orchid?

Furthermore why wouldn't disconnecting the battery keep the bomb from exploding? If cooling the battery worked, then disconnecting it should too.
How about drilling a hole in the battery casing and letting the battery fluid drain out?

                    • Adam Savage of Mythbusters on the C4 bomb
We blow a lot of things up on MythBusters, so I know from experience that last night Lost missed the mark. The 500 pounds of C4, that whole movie thing about "dummy triggers" and fake tripwires—it's all a load of crap. Nobody does that. At least that's what my friends at the FBI tell me. Would you want to set up explosives so that pretty much anything you did would make them go off? It's just like guessing and cutting one of the wires in the movies: Nobody would survive using that technique for very long, including Keamy and his crew. The whole training of a bomb tech is to work safely with explosives, not dangerously. There are too many ways to mess it up. Also, I'm pretty sure that C4 isn't conductive, which it would need to be to set up its wiring as a resistance feedback loop that could tell if you started to pull out the detonators. And if freezing the battery works, why not just disconnect it? Oh, right, the monitored feedback loop. But wait, C4 isn't conductive ... never mind.

Though the explosion looked about right in terms of size, it was a bit slow—high explosives happen at over 20,000 ft. per second. Plus, any explosion that you would survive happens silently—you see it before you hear it. But movies and TV never do that. Plus, C4 lets off with a much more concussive ka-whump than they ever are able to show in the movies.

Come on! You think a boat like that would have a drill that could do that?! All they have is liquid nitrogen and C4!

                        • So, to recap, in the island present, we have:

The O6--Jack, Kate, Sun, Sayid, Hugo, Aaron--returning home and lying about their experiences. They have seen the island disappear, and have no idea what happened to it.

Desmond also escaped the island and is with Penny on the high seas. He also saw the island vanish. All we know is that he is planning on disappearing, and I hope he does--of all the characters except Hugo, he is most deserving of a happy ending.

Frank also escaped the island, and is presently with Des and Pen. We can also surmise that he is planning on vanishing. He also saw the island vanish.

Jin was last seen running towards the helicopter, moments before the freighter went boom. He is presumed dead.

Michael was last seen getting a benediction from Christian before the freighter went boom, suggesting the island wanted him to either save one or more of the above listed characters, or come to the realization about being a father that he shared with Jin. He is definitely dead.

Daniel was last seen ferrying a boatload of redshirts to the freighter; we never saw him reach it. The O6 + 2 did not see him after the island vanished, so we may assume they were also caught in the island's wake.

Juliet, Sawyer, Miles, Charlotte, Bernard, and Rose are on the beach, and saw the freighter go boom. They are forced to assume that all of the above listed characters are dead.

Claire was last seen in Jacob's cabin with Christian. Dead? Mostly dead? How? Unclear.

Locke is the new leader of the Others/Hostiles. He also is forced to assume that all of the above characters are dead, due to the boom.

Ben has moved the island, and is subsequently whisked several months and thousands of miles into the future, landing in Tunisia.

                          In the future...

Ben somehow discovers how Nadia dies--or flat out lies--and gains Sayid as a weapon against Widmore. He has also vowed vengence for Alex, and plans on killing Penny. He confronts Jack after Locke's death, instructing him that they all must go back, including Locke. It's not entirely clear who is included in that--Des? Walt? Frank? Not is it clear why they must go back--that is likely to be the central question of the next season.

Locke, 2-3 years into the future, gets off the island (perhaps by moving it again?), and under an alias, contacts some (all?) of the O6. He tells them that things got "bad" after they left. It's not known what that means, but sounds pretty ****ing awesome. It is unknown how he dies, suicide being a likely choice.

Sun has gained control of her father's company and has approached Widmore about some kind of alliance or joint venture. It is not known exactly what she is playing at, or what her father knows of all this.

Sayid has taken Hugo out of the loony bin, saying (lying?) that they are not going back to the island. Hurley, at the very least, was being watched by someone, probably a Widmore stooge.

Kate is raising Aaron as her own, even though she knows Jack is his uncle.

Other than things getting "bad", we don't know what has happened to the Others/Hostiles, Juliet, Sawyer, Charlotte, Miles, Bernard, or Rose, nor do we know the ultimate fate of Daniel or Jin (though Jin is almost surely dead). Nor do we know when Des, Pen, or Frank are, though Des and Pen are probably on the move to hide from Ben and/or Widmore.

                          Does that about cover it?

now let's write down the unaswered questions:
                            - what is the island?
                            - what is smokey?
                            - how does the island move?
                            - is charlie really dead?
                            - if yes, does hugo see dead people and play chess with them
                            etc

                            • I'm betting that Jin is still alive just so there's a reason for Sun to go back to the island.
