This is very sad, though I guess I'm not particularly surprised that it happened.

I take it you are ignoring the Hindu Tigers of Tamil Elam, who pioneered such suicide attacks, and assassinated the Prime Minister of India with just such an attack a couple of decades ago.
Twenty plus years ago is the same as now!
Muslims didn't invent this, and nor were they the first to use it against politicians.
I am not sure who you think you are responding to, but obvoulsy not me since I said nothing to insinuate this. Regardless, suicide bombings are the Islamic extremest's MO, used across multiple continents amoungst people who have one commonality, Islam.

You might also note that "Undermine Democracy" can be thought of as referring to "undermine the ability of the people to choose their government". Democracy really should be "small d" not "big D", it's not generally a government type in and of itself, but a society in which the people ultimately choose who governs them is democratic regardless of whether it is a true Democracy (there aren't any AFAIK) or not.
Well, in Pakistan a militairy dictator can sack the Chief Judge at a whim, impose emergency rule and still uphold the image of stearing the country towards democracy.
The discussion on capital D or d seems completely moot to me.

Truth. In an interview about a month ago, IIRC, she acknowledged that there was a good chance she could be assassinated and that she'd be willing to lay down her life for her country.
I'm agreeing with you too much, LOTM .

first PM of a muslim country. Yup, I'm saying Pakistan is more advanced than the U.S. who seems to have issue with strong women and won't elect a woman prez.
I'm convinced it's Musharraf. He came to power because of her fall and she was a dangerous opponent for him after she came back. It has seemed to me after she came back from exile Musharraf got more and more pushed aside, so he certainly have motive.

In this case I would say that eliminating the primary opposition prior to an election - no matter how rigged - decreases the ability of the populace to choose their own government, so it harms Pakistani democracy (even while no Democracy exists there).

Didn't the commies invent suicide bombing? IIRC there was quite a bit of suicide bombing in Vietnam, nad in Malaysia before that. Also didn't the guy (Ignacy Hryriewiecki) who killed Tsar Alexander II blow himself up?

Another delusion of yours. You obviously have little idea of what drives these people. Every Pakistani leader risks death. The prospect of power is a powerful motivation, especially for people like Bhutto. It's not the first time someone has risked death to satisfy their bloated ego.
This whole thing is bull****. Her return to Pakistan was almost wholly choreographed by the United States and Britain, in service of their own interests in their moronic "War on Terror". Now that their goal has been frustrated, they are crying. As if our scumbag leaders care about Pakistani democracy or ordinary Pakistanis. They obviously didn't, since they wanted to inflict a corrupt and brutal thief back on the Pakistanis.
This woman was not Aung San Suu Kyi. Don't be fooled by our ****wit politicians into feeling sorry for her or thinking this is a bad day for democracy. The ****heads who run our countries demonstrate their contempt for democracy on a regular basis. For example, in their slavish support of the racist Israeli state.
