I might point out that assault rifles generally beat handguns. Hand guns are generally pretty inaccurate, especially in the hands of an amateur, he'd have to be pretty close to neutralize the shooter. A man with an assault rifle properly positioned would have command of the entire mall.

With how bad the american military is for friendly fire i'd crap myself if dozens of civilians started firing wildly at somebody who had a gun.
You could probably go in there with 1 bullet and end up killing 23 people by setting off a chain reaction.

One thing is for sure, these shooters are definately targeting areas were they are least likely to encounter armed resistance.

I haven't seen where one of these nutjobs have stormed into a police station to see how many armed cops they could bag before return fire ended their spree. Although I'm sure that will happen at some point in the future.

I don't agree with the entire premise of the OP, but I do think that we should re-examine how vulnerable these normally 'weapons free environments' actually are.

So, while I don't favor more armed civilians, I do favor an increase in security in these vulnerable areas.

If that means more security guards with guns at the mall, college and grade school campus's, then so be it.

We can't entirely stop the criminals and the insane from commiting crimes with guns, but by addressing our vulnerabilities maybe we can limit the damage they can do.

So I do favor more guns in the hands of more cops and more security guards coupled with an increased awareness of where people are increasingly more vulnerable.

If that were true, Washington DC and NYC should be the epicenter of mass shootings like these, because they have the most stringent anti-gun laws in the Country.

They aren't.

Making NYC's guns laws even stricter has done absolutely nothing to slow the decline in murders here, and the number of murders by random strangers (such as a mall shooting) has declined dramatically, to the point that few murders fit this category (as opposed to criminals killing the competition, or crimes of passion)
