The guy was a big dude. There is no garuntee that if they went hands on the cop would win. So why take the chance?

I think cops are too quick to use their fancy new toy, but I must agree with Donegeal & Aeson that when the cops asks for your documentation, you effing provide it - you don't sit their and argue with him.

                    That being said:

                    1. I can't see the video, because I'm at work.
                    2. From the posts in this thread, it definitely sounds like the cop was out of line.

Obviously that big guy was planning to jump on the cop and beat him to a bloody pulp.

Didn't you see it from the aggressive way he said "hey" and "wait a minute" and "why are you doing this?"

He took an aggressive step towards the officer. If I were in that situation, I'd have done the same thing.

Make a move, make even a hint of a move at that point, and .

Like I'm (or any cop) going to want to fight in a situation like that.

Considering that tasers have never ever killed anyone before, this is a reasonable position.

Come on everybody - you should know by now that the taser is a tool to be used by cops when threre's the slightest chance of an inconvenience or mild annoyance. Cops should never have to try to talk through a situation, or ever deal with anyone who doesn't goose step into line. I look forward to the day that every routine traffic stop is handled by a cop walking up to the vehicle, immediately tasering the occupant and dragging them out of their car. Instant compliance - why wait for a situation to possibly escalate at all?

Need I remind you who you serve? Yes, society needs police officers, but in the end you serve the person you dehumanize by calling a "subject".

It's about using judgment, and it was used poorly here.

Someone posted it in the other thread, but there have been something like 214 deaths after someone got tasered. Of those 214 deaths, I believe something like 12 actually involved the Tazer in the cause of death.

Now I don't have the numbers, but I would guess that the Tazer has been used on people something in the realm of over 1,000,000 times (I'm talking about number of times used in the entire world). So that works out to be about 0.000012%. Our hypothetical stapler from the last discussion is almost as deadly and I do consider it a reasonable position.
