Why did you get a cellphone?

Opportunity for a poll just slid by.

Emergency use, primarily. I got a Tracfone and paid for the minutes. I don't want any service plan, screw you.
I don't want the phone, but I can recognize the good in case of emergency.
I want to do somethng, I don't know what, to these damn people that drive around with their cell phone in hand, gabbing.

Its easier to be reached 24/7. I found that a lot of my friends had problems reaching me. Especially if I was at the girlfriend's house. So a cell phone worked great to prevent that sort of thing.

up until a few days ago I did not have a cell phone (though I have had one in the early 2000's, and have had work cell phones).

And the cell phone I have right now is just a prepaid jobby I really have no intention of using much. It's something I used for my trip to cali in case I got a job offer (and I would have cut my trip short).

prepaid seems to meet my needs. Useful in an emergency, or just an urgent situation that can't wait, but not an expensive 1 or 2 year contract for something I hardly ever used.

At one point in the early 2000 i did attempt to get rid of my home phone and use my cell. I did, in fact, do this. But the reception in the area of my home was just terrible. I couldn't keep calls for more than a few minutes. It was so bad I couldn't even call Sprint to order a LAN line (I got disconnected before completing the ordering process); I had to do it from work instead. I haven't been seriously interested in personal cell phones ever since.

P.S. I'm using tracphone. I have no idea what model it is. Just some motorola. I can care less about features. except the ability to talk and hear the other person.

Originally, I was forced to get a cellular by my corporate overlords. I really didn't want one, but they paid for it and didn't care if I made personal calls. It proved very useful, especially when traveling (alarm, clock always on local time, no hotel phone bills, etc.).

Now, running my own business, my entire infrastructure consists of a laptop and celphone (plus assorted peripherals). The world is my office.

Before I knew of you, I thought I understood the concept of jackass, but you showed me what other jackasses aspire to be.

                        *cough*
Anyway, I got a cellphone because I was about to start college and my first job and as such be keeping odd hours and in different parts of town from that point on, instead of the clock-like M-F 8am-2pm schedule of the previous 4 years at one high school or the M-F 8am-2pm schedule of the 2 years at one middle school before that or the M-F 9am-3pm schedule of the 7 years at one elementary before that (OK, 6 years of that, but 7 only because I don't much remember kindergarten). As I'd be driving myself, I needed a way to quickly contact someone (like AAA) if I needed help. Also, it's much easier to get a hold of me through my cellphone because it's almost never turned off, even when charging, unless I'm in class or at the movies. I hate using it (or any phone, for that matter) to talk for more than a few minutes as I much prefer face-to-face contact.
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

I got a cell phone when I moved out, otherwise people couldn't... you know... call me

It was one of those crappy phones you get almost for free (Nokia), you only have to stay by that provider for 6 months... worst deal ever, as there was much cheaper providers around. When the deal was over I switched to a cheaper (and better) provider and got a new (and better) cell phone

Currently I have a SE phone for private use (old, but still good) and some Nokia phone for work (new, but still crappy... I have yet to see a Nokia phone that is not crappy). The work phone I only use when visiting Germany (it's not possible contact me when outside Denmark on my private phone). I have set all calls to my work phone to be transferred to my private phone (to avoid having to use the crappy phone)

Basically the only thing I use the Nokia phone for, is to wake me up in the morning
This space is empty... or is it?

Mobile telephones?! What is this confounded devilry. I use a telegraph to transmit my messages.

                              But I digress.

We got cell phones for the family at the point when we were running in three different directions at once: I was trapped at work for long hours, my daughter was trapped at school fro long hours, and my wife was running hither and you doing all the things my daughter and I couldn't because we were trapped. I hate cell phones, personally, but the ability to get in touch instantly with the rest of the family is a decided benefit -- even if my teenage daughter doesn't always see it that way. (Though she should; we just left her alone last weekend while Mrs. Firefly and I went to Hong Kong; I doubt we would have been comfortable leaving her if we hadn't had cell phones.)

It's been almost 10 years since I had to sing that song and as a class made our teacher realize that we probably shouldn't sing it in front of an audience as it sounded a little too much like we were singing, "There is a bomb in Galena..."

                                But I digress.
