Was Saddam the head of a representative government after all?
You mean back to when Hussein signed a Cease Fire, then immediately broke it by firing on aircraft patrolling the No Fly Zone, while simultaneously gassing Kurds?
What's your version, slick?

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead
It would seem that there was involvement, Patroklos. I see little reason to doubt it.
Involvement in Iraqi politics? No doubt. Dubbing lil' Saddam our golden boy specifically before at least the seventies, no way in hell.
Again, do you guys not realize he was 26 is 1963? Just think about it for a second.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
The main problem for the USA has been our penchant for feeling we need to choose "the lesser of 2 evils", at a particular point in time.
Rather, we should just wash our hands of it.

I don't think he was necessarily "our man." I think the evidence seems to indicate that the CIA realized pretty early that he was useful, and used him.

I think the CIA saw a person who would do anything. I'm sure they didn't see him ruling, but he was still our man.

Tell MtG that. He fancies the Cold War.

Iran is ****ed up. Iraq is ****ed up. Syria is ****ed up.
So why get involved at any time with any of them?
Call that Cold War if you want. It just makes sense.
Here. Shoot your self in one foot or the other, or you just ignore it. I choose ignore.

The CIA believed that Saddam was the least friendly to the Soviets. It had nothing to do with him being less evil and certainly nothing to do with Iraq.

Are you the one citing 1991? If so, then yes.
USA did what the U.N. wanted to and numbnuts Hussein immediately broke the treaty.
Clinton spent 8 years ignoring it while he diddled the help.

I don't consider coincidental benefits to amount to "putting him in power."

Yea well, Bush Senior (AKA The CIA President) didn't change the regime.
And he didn't diddle the help either. So there.

Don't get me started on Bush, Sr. That dumb bastard should have told the U.N. to stick the idea of a Cease Fire squarely up their ass. U.N. is SO much help.
The one time Clinton got involved at all, Somalia with U.N. help, was certainly a cluster****.
We didn't need to be in Iraq a second time. We should have taken out Hussein the first time. Bush ****ed up and listened to the U.N.
