Yes they are. You don't see it because you aren't a Socialist.
Ah, yes. The neverending war againts the capitalist oppressors. How could I forget?

By every sense of the word the economy of Venezuela was in a depression in 1998. The people in Venezuela aren't all doing well yet, not by a long shot, and they still have very dangerous enemies.
When will the crisis end? When Hugo is 90 and still clinging to power?

Venezuela is a place that you look at and have to wonder why the hell people can't see that that's true.

It will end when it ends.

This goes back to the point I made about creating crises to stay in power, if you're allowed to stay in power if there is a crisis.

If that is the reasoning, then leaders will simply ensure there is a crisis (or talk up a non-crisis as if it is one).

Cold War, WoT (as if there really was one), and Vietnam obvioulsy were not serious enough crisis to warrant extending term limits. Anyone suggesting that during those times would have just been laughed at.

JFK (though our involvement was still at the "advisor" level at that point, IIRC) ->LBJ->Nixon.

LBJ and Richard Nixon. The changes in US approach to the war, in US politics vis a vis the war, when the presidency changed hands midstream, were among the biggest historical things that happened in the US in 1968, 1969, 1970.

Well other than supporting fascism in Greece, I suppose.

So the Cold War, Vietnam and WoT fail to meet your standards, but Venezuela's current circumstances do?

                  Enough said.

Which is why Chavez is being laughed at for saying Venezuela is in crisis as is any idiot who claims the same.

depends when you date the beginning of the war. Tonkin gulf res, the Marines landing in Da Nang, were under LBJ.

Under JFK we only had "advisers" there. And spec forces. And CIA guys running around Laos. Thats not being at war, of course.

Surely no one expects that after the withdrawl from Iraq we wont still have advisors, spec forces, and the CIA there?

With the exception of JFK they were very unpopular presidents. Why question whether or not they should have extended term limits.
