  • I don't see a connection with extending term limits and abolishing elections.
The concern of many is that is a later step. First term limits, then more.

More likely, however, is that he gets rid of the term limits and rigs the elections instead of doing away with them. Control of the press, etc.

Note: I agree the pre-Chavez government of Venezuela wasn't good. That doesn't make everything he does good.

    • So how does this combine with his new power to rule by decree?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

It's not like this stuff hasn't happened before in other countries. This isn't wild conspiracy stuff. There are examples. I even gave one already (Mugabe).

I'll be happy if I'm wrong.

He might just make himself president for life. I don't see the reason for so much concern though. Venezuelans would lose nothing. In fact, they would still be better off then being ruled by the opposition.

Not good at all, but no worse than what the people previously had.

He won't be able to get away with that. All elections so far have been observed, and I don't think it is politically possible for Chavez to change that in the future.

Who says you need a reason? Chavez doesn't feel like he needs one. Besides, his "we have stuff to do" reason is far, far, far worse than a Cold War is still going on justification.

You need a reason because it's unacceptable otherwise. You can't just do it, because you feel like it. Holy cow dude. And Chavez does have a reason. The ****ing capitalists have been robing the country blind for a long time and his people were mostly all living in extreme poverty. Dang dude, I mean Daaaaang!

Hes gotten away with limits on the press, and arrests of political opponents (anyone who opposes him is automatically connected to the coup against him) and hes increasing his control over the judiciary, and now the central bank. Hmm, judiciary, central bank, press, that couldnt by coincidence be the institutions that could manage to stop him, could it?

The ****ing liberals have been robing the country blind for a long time and had brought down the greatest economy in the world to a state of "malaise" and they were letting the frigging USSR take over the world, among other high crimes. You need the stop hitting the drugs. Chavez is doing it because he feels like it. Capitalists robbing the country blind is no reason to declare a crisis. If your cause is just the next person in your party will get elected and continue those policies.

He can declare any damn crisis he wants. He can take it where ever it takes him. The people believe the crisis is severe enough. No one would buy that **** from Reagan (as great as an orator as he was).

I support him regarding the political opponents, although this has been exaggerated. There is ample reason for him to be paranoid about a coup, and ample reason for Venezuelans to fear one.

hmmm? The military is completely loyal, which is why the last attempt had to be based in the oil company. hes taken over that now, and the broadcast media.

Now hes just squashing anyone who could oppose him in any other way. If you dont care to call that "democratic opposition" well thats semantics.

The only base for opposition now are the groups to his left. Their time will come.

I wonder how many people said that about Hitler when he came to power. When Chavez's own power hungry ego finally makes things go wrong, how many people do you think he will kill to keep it quiet?

I'll check this thread again when thousands in Venezuala are despairing in sorrow from having their children dead and their civil rights trampled. Something that ALWAYS happens under the rule of dictators (100% so far since the dawn of man). We'll see what you have to say then Kid.
