So says fake Boris. I'll await the judge's decision.

Richelieu - I did state the RoC. It is interesting that a province as rich in natural resources as Quebec is could still be a "have not" province. It looks like the cycle of dependancy at work.

Cronos - I was being sarcastic.

edit - Btw, Why has no one explained away the goings on in Heroux? I posted the link which everyone on the opposing side chose to ignore.

I won't lay all the blame at the RoC's feet. Quebec is only slowly developing a class of entrepreneurs of its own.
It's not a coincidence that the separatist movement is losing ground IMO. Today's young Quebeckers haven't lived in an english dominated society. They see almost none of the signs that their parents and - mostly - their grandparents saw of their own economical and social status being below that of the english because those signs aren't there anymore.
      What?

I don't share Richelieu's opinion on this. Polls constantly show that sovereignty is more popular with young Québécois than older ones. As we all know, Quebec's population is aging - baby boomers are not only becoming more conservative, but also tired and bored about the neverending debate.

Hérouxville is a small town in a rural area. It's just a 'red state'.

BTW, the riding in which it is located went Liberal. It is also Jean Chrétien's former riding.

Yes they did, and no, if you're an immigrant to Quebec, you must study in French if you go a public school.

Bill 101 stipulates that children attending public schools must do so in French until the post-secondary level. (If they go to private, it's their choice). An exception allows for children to attend the English-language public schools if either one of the parents received his/her education in English in Canada.
Meaning: if you come to Quebec from outside Canada, you'll be in a predominantly french society and we'll offer you free education in french. If you come from the rest of Canada and you want to study in english, you can if one of your parents did too. If not, you can pay to get your education in english. We have a great english education system.
So let's say your parents came over from the UK, you'd be forced to go to school in French... that's totally fair.

To some extent, it is true. Many immigrants are especially sensitive on issues relating to nationalism, or to what threatens political stability. However, the PQ has undergone a vast effort to integrate 'neo-Québécois" in its movement, with success. Many PQ candidates in Montreal come from immigrant backgrounds. A survey conducted a few years ago also showed that immigrants aged 18-30 favored separatism in a proportion of 39%.
Of course they do, your forced education in French is paying off.

Tell me sweetheart, if France doesn't offer free English education to immigrants, why should Quebec?

That's right, with exceptions already posted.

                How is it unfair?

Free education provided by the state in the official language of the state. We must be mad.

                  A stupid question:

If I emigrate to Toronto (for those unfamiliar of the OT, I'm from Paris) and have kids there: Will my kids be entitled to a public education in French? Or will I be forced to pay if I want them to have such an education?

I have no idea what this sentence means. I'm not even sure it's grammatically correct...

They won't be entitled to an education in French by virtue of the Charter, however Ontario's laws are not as strict as Quebec's and allow parents to choose whether to send their kids to French or English school.

Because France isn't a bilingual country and no one in France gets free English language public education?

I mean, as an immigrant, who at the time spoke English reasonably well, but not French I was put into a French school where I was reasonably expected to lose a year learning the language in an "acceuil" class before I could begin the real education. Fortunately, I was too smart

But Quebec offers English-language education to some, but not to others. The distinction is purposely drawn to limit the spread of English in the province, which fits quite well into the general attempt to wipe out English in Quebec.

The provisions regarding education in Bill 101 are perfectly legal. What was ruled unconstitutional were the provisions regarding commercial display. The Bourassa government amended them in 1993.

Every province in Canada has got its own official language.

Sorry, but if you think being required to follow a French education in order to live in Quebec is abuse, you're retarded.

Precisely. It's called a minority right. It's not everyone's positive right.
