No, not yet. I did get 3 raises in less than a year though. But I didn't get them from the owner (the one that says I should be more like Barney the dragon.)
But the thing is that I get my raises from my direct boss. The business owner is against the raises I get from my direct boss.

This is not surprising. Your direct boss is getting paid for performance, so he's paying you for your performance. The owner probably views his role as keeping the whole ship going in the right direction -- more of a political role.
You might think about kissing the owner's ass a little bit. Throw him a bone. Say that you needed respect from the employees, so have been riding them hard. But you've thought about what he said, you value his opinion, and that you're willing to ease up a little, if he thinks that's best.
Basically, this is free to you.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

You're the third person that suggests that to me. I'll probably end-up doing it...even though I'm the total opposite of a brown nose.

What's the problem? Quit being a whiny *****. If you're unfriendly, people won't be friendly back to you. Which should be OK with you, if what you are saying is true. Sometimes you've got to go on the warpath. It's just business and you're getting the job done. Does the boss reward results? If not, then pack your bags. It's time to move on, when you get a chance.
IIRC, you've had this job for at least a year. And the job was a definite move up. So look at it as a good stepping stone and, when the time is right, move on.
A laughing and smiling coworker makes the environment more tolerable. On my team we're almost all laughing/joking and it's fun. Someone who is serious all the time is a bit stressful as a whole. Consider loosening up a bit.
They're not mutually exclusive. As you may know, I've got a big mouth and a hard heard and don't let people walk all over me...but at the same time I'm rather jovial and smile a lot.
Work can be something other than menial labour with grim faces.
Asher, I don't think i've ever agreed with you more

Spec- sounds like you and I need to merge personalities somehow. My problem as a manager is I want people to like me too much, so I avoid saying those hard things I need to say

I've never worked in an office, so I can't say, really. Could you, idunno, try offering to help your coworkers/subordinates out every once in a while, so as to shift your image from "jerk" to "serious but decent?" That sounds preferable, to me at least, to pasting a smile on my face while I work. Work is hard enough without keeping up a lame charade the whole time, no?
And I recommend not talking to Drix further in this thread. Who-pwned-who arguments are annoying and rarely, if ever, accomplish anything.

As long as he doesn't rescind the raises, sounds like he's fine with them... He's just being political, and trying to encourage you to grow in an area you need to grow in.

I'll do the smiling thing, as for giving people help, I already do a lot more than my share. And dont pass as the jerk, just as a grim kind of guy. Which is totally not me on weekends.

Fixed.

And yet, in a week, you'll spend more time with your colleagues at work than with friends on the weekends... Loosen up and make your life more enjoyable.
