Right, but there's always a reasonable doubt with the whole .. company culture. It can be totally overblown as well. Like cheesy and really just awful and if you don't smile like a robot, you're being an *******. So this might be the case as well, and I'd definitely disagree with that stuff.

But there are benefits to getting more individual approaches with people. You can quickly determine the real *******s that work for you.. and then get rid of them.

When I moved into semi-upper-management (director level), my boss (VP) used to ask: "How much doin' are you doin'?" The implication was clear: you can't survive in management if you're trying to do both the planning and the execution. Transitioning from a tactical to a strategic role was a much bigger change/challenge than I anticipated.

seriously, youre looking at things from the perspective of managment simply being a role to control people. Its much more than that. Part of being a manager is getting people on board to work with you through assessing what methods work in building rapport. You arent doing that.

You should either adapt to the demands of the job or find a new one.

I don't think anyone is advocating the phony smile routine. But if you're short with someone who interrupts you with a question, it tends to come off as criticism. It's something to be aware of, and it's not hard to control.

Question for you, Spec: Were you formerly a worker bee in the dept. you now manage? It's very common for former peers to be critical when one of their own is promoted.

There was no complaint made dude! The owner went around and asked questions...for PR reasons imo...and that's the only thing they said...And I find it weird that I'm criticised about it since every other thing is going perfect.

This actually sounds to me like they're considering grooming you for advancement. If they promote you into management, then they have to live with you, so they need to evaluate whether you can adapt. Since you're getting the job done, they're certainly not trying to dump you.

Think about that. It certainly makes more sense than your vague "for PR reasons" explanation...

No. I was the sales coordinator. I had no contact with the plant except for cigarette breaks, which was not so often.

No, I'm not unpleasant. I always say hello, talk to them, ask about their opinions on how things should work to make things more easier/efficient for them , very indulgent on absences, talk with them about personal problems they need help with ( lend money, need off time, need overtime), I always try accommodate people the best I can. I even bring them their coffee because they are not allowed to get some while not on break...which I think is unfair considering that the people in the office are allowed to...

I'm very ''fair'' oriented and fight for their rights often like I just mentioned for the coffee thing. They are not allowed to, well I think they are so I will get it for them. I also bring in donuts and such everynow and then...

The problem is, I dont smile or joke enough. So, to them, I seem grim and I dont even notice I do that...
