I avoid the asskissing route. I loathe when people do it to me, especially when it's blatant. I view it as being manipulated and respond negatively to it, actually.

    I prefer honesty from everyone.

You didn't own me in the slightest. You went belly up and pulled the old "you're a troll and I won't bite" routine once you saw the cause was lost.

Being grim is not something I do on purpose, its how I am when I work. So you ask how hard it is to be nice, I wouldn't know.
I will try to be nicer, but I cant over do it suddenly, otherwise it'll seem fake and everybody will notice and it'll backfire in my face.

I see people management isn't the foremost skill of yours Spec. I can take a lot of traits in bosses - even laziness where I end up covering their arses. But lack of appreciation and disrespect are certainly not ones I can tolerate. Perhaps if you wonder why you are getting low productivity out of your staff, look to how you treat them and respect them - if you're getting their backs up, don't expect good work from them.

Where did Spec say anything about disrespecting people, or not appreciating them?

Where did he say that he was getting their backs up?

Or are you just making stuff up?

Usually when people are appreciated and they hava a boss with good leadership qualities they don't jump over his head as a group.

Depends what 'nice' means, and how nice other people are being to you.

Civility, curtesy and polite respect and even smiles and good humour is one thing. Working unreasonable hours at unreasonal intensity to do other people's work for them is something else. In some jobs people hand find themselves at the hub of a wheel, with demands coming in from all directions. Sometimes people have to be told 'no' and if it makes them cry then tough.

Nothing wrong with looking after yourself and not being a doormat when your time is in demand. If the company is badly structured so thath much weight falls on one person's shoulders, it's not the fault of the Atlas who has to bear the load.

                              Read between the lines...

I’d tell them all, but I cant. It wouldn’t be ethical…I’d kick them all out, except 2, but I’d scrap our production…
                              There's the disrespect...

He hates me because, at work, I’m not a loveable huggable type of guy. He says that I don’t laugh or smile enough at work and it intimidates my employees. BS, imo. I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to do a job and I do it pretty damn fvcking well too.
Poor people manager...straight from the bosses mouth. And that is the edited version in Spec's favour.

He says that only because he heard that from employees…
Pretty serious if someone has gone to your report's line manager to complain. I have only had to do that once before, and it was a serious matter to make me have to do it...

The angry attitude indicates to me that he has been caught with his pants down - ie, he's majorly f**ked off his employees and now he is angry with them because they couldn't tolerate his sh*t any longer.

About the whole let's be nice thing in the working environment, I think it's important that the environment and atmosphere is open and welcoming, however!!!! When it gets to the fake thing, where everything is fake and pretending stuff, that's annoying, stupid and dishonest. It's a different thing to be nice than honest. Being nice is giving good feedback when the job is done well. Being honest is saying like it is when it isn't getting done.

It's like.. it's like the joke about the professor and female student suggesting she could do anything to pass the course... and the professor suggested reading and studying. I encountered the same situation few days ago, when some dude was talking about how he will plead mental problems if he isn't going to get enough credits to get the state support continuing, and suggested everyone else should do the same, easy money.

Well.. there's even an easier way. Study and get those credits. That's the easiest way. So... if people aren't putting out, the one who demands pretending it's cool is the person who wants to lie because of the possible controversy and not being able to be the most popular guy around. Screw that. If you have employees of your own, you are responsible for the overall result of that, and if people aren't puttign out, it's your job to motivate them and not be the nice guy. If there's something wrong with the conditions, or the work itself is not realistic or fair, then your job is to take it up to a higher up and defend your people. But if your people are being the problem, then you represent the company and they will answer to you. That's the way it is and that's the way it oughta be and if someone has a problem with it, they can get up and find a new place to work in.
