There are people who wouldn't vote for him because he attended a madrassa. But these people wouldn't vote for him anyways.

Honestly, there are a problems Obama would/will have in his campaign. But his father won't be one of them, and his middle name won't be one of them, however much desperate opponents in either party might try.

I can't for the life of me understand why this is important to anyone.

I will admit it is more pertinant than the fact his father was a former Muslim.

Do you even know what a madrassa is?
          Do you?

People forget that Wahhabis weren't all that prominent in the Islamic world a few decades ago. They're a relatively recent trend, and I doubt that more than a few such schools existed in Jakarta at the time he was there.

LOTM - My impression is that its more or less equivalent to a yeshiva - an academy for the study of primarily legal texts (sharia in the one case, halacha in the other) using traditional methods.

LOTM - the Saudis started pouring money overseas after 1979, in part to counter Iranian influence. My impression is there are quite a lot of Saudi funded institutions across the muslim world, and that some non-Wahabi sunnis (such as some Sufis) consider this a major problem.

LOTM - well yeah. Parents make all kinds of decisions for all kinds of reasons

Exactly. You can't support gay rights or abortion and be a real Christian.

Yeah you can. I disagree with those who support Abortion, but lots of real Christians do. And lots support gay rights, or are even gay themselves.

I admit that there are scriptures against homosexual activity. Just as there is against all other sorts of activity. If homosexual activity is a sin, then it is between the people involved and God.

And it assuredly is not the Super Secret Ultimate Sin that many on the right beleive.

(I personally think it is more the result of sin, but it is still between gay Christians (like MrFun, who hasn't posted in a while) and God)
