Why couldnt the indians defend themselves?
Portugal is a small country, with a small population, on the other side of the world, and sending a few thousands soldiers on carracks from Portugal to India must have taken like a whole yearI need a foot massage

IIUC, it was a vassal of one of the Southern Indian kingdoms (Bijapur), but the local strongman allied with the Portuguese to break away from them.THEY!!111 OMG WTF LOL LET DA NOMADS AND TEH S3D3NTARY PEOPLA BOTH MAEK BITER AXP3REINCES

]quote]2. I dont doubt you are right in that its used elsewhere in more specialized areas. Im quite sure, though that SOME works on the inquisition wont find it relevant. I keep meaning to read Netanyahu on the Inquisition, and Im not expecting to find it mentioned there (since its orthogonal to the issues hes focusing on, IIUC) [/QUOTE]
I don't know the central hypothesis of his works, I'm not familiar with it. Which book are you talking about? "The Origins of..."?
And you're right that the black legend actually is not relevant if you go to the archives without a preset philosophy about what the S.I. was and how particularily evil the Spanish were. But, especially for Anglo-Saxon authors, this is not possible, since the anti-Spanish propaganda has created powerful images that are in our heads. Those need to reflected (from the author's perspective) and pointed out (for the reader, who possesses similar images). The outcome of the study should be mostly independent from the issue though, of course."The world is too small in Vorarlberg". Austrian ex-vice-chancellor Hubert Gorbach in a letter to Alistar [sic] Darling, looking for a job...

Man, I didn't notice the bit about crucifixion, I just skimmed it and saw the crap about not being allowed to eat chutney and goat-meat after a wedding, to symbolically urinate on plants on Fridays, and all the other inane "persecutions" which I must say made my heart bleed far more than the torture and murder I usually associate with inquisitions.
But the claim that Christians crucified ANYBODY makes that whole story laughable. There's an old story that Saint Peter asked to be crucified upside-down because he felt himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. The cross is held in great reverence as a symbol of divine grace. Why the devil would any inquisition honor heretics by associating them with the Messiah?
Not that I care, really. If you go back far enough, you'd no doubt find that everyone had at least one ancestor who'd been cruelly treated by at least one ancestor of every other person alive today. This differs from those cases only in details; if it were a question of magnitude, I would still be saving my outrage for the Holocaust and the treatment of the Native Americans.
