And I hope I count as a serious historian for you.
ive not read anything by you but posts here.

Ive only read a few histories of Spain and the Spanish empire, and didnt see the term black legend in them - ive seen it only on wiki and other websites, in the context of strong defensiveness about Spains early modern history.

It's all lies anyway. The Portuguese were only there to investigate the origins of Hindu civilisation...

Well, in a "history of Spain" you'd probably only find it as a sidenote, if anything. But every work or article on the Spanish-European (esp. English) relations won't come around it. Or works on the topics that are most influenced by the black legend, like the Spanish Inquisition, the treatment of the Indians, the outstanding brutality and intolerance of the Spanish etc.
And please note that by pointing that out, I'm not saying that the Spanish society was not intolerant or anything, I'm just saying that the protestants had bigger and better printing presses.

                    1. when I said posts here, i meant posts on poly, not just in this thread, or even just in OT.

                    2. I dont doubt you are right in that its used elsewhere in more specialized areas. Im quite sure, though that SOME works on the inquisition wont find it relevant. I keep meaning to read Netanyahu on the Inquisition, and Im not expecting to find it mentioned there (since its orthogonal to the issues hes focusing on, IIUC)
