What if we breed octopi without pain sensors and cook them alive? Is that okay?

Er, octopi are actually fairly intelligent. At least one species can use tools, for example.

Aside from the example cited with the coconut shell, I recall reading about an octopus that would kill a small animal (a little crab, I think) and use it to lure a larger one out from under a rock where it was hiding. Then, of course, it would kill and eat the big one. Essentially, this octopus knew how to go fishing. They're not dumb animals, just repulsive by human standards. Much like crows.

      • Elok is right. Octopi are capable of relatively complex problem solving and are quite clever. They are also escape artists. Their spatial problem solving ability combined with not having a bone in their body means they frequently escape their tanks through tiny cracks and raid food cabinets.

Aside from how intelligent they are, as discussed above, one might think that infliction of needless suffering on any animal is wrong.

          • Define needless. Is eating meat needless?

              **** off, hippy.

Also, Oerdin is wrong, as usual. That's not hot soy sauce and the squid (not octopus) isn't being cooked alive. It's dead, but killed recently enough that its limbs still react to sensory inputs (like having normal soy sauce poured on it).

No, eating meat is not needless. What can be needless is the process of how the meat gets to your plate.

                    • Exactly. We can obtain meat without being unnecessarily cruel to animals.

What if you enjoy watching a squid dance on your plate just as you enjoy getting your nutrients from animal flesh?

Then you probably have something wrong with you, knowing the pain you are causing the animal. I don't think that sort of thing should actually be illegal, but I do think that if you enjoy torturing animals, you probably are messed up in the head.

Right, and if you want to kill animals for sport you are completely normal and well-adjusted.

Yes, actually. Enjoying hunting something isn't the same as enjoying watching something in pain. Obviously we can argue all day over the various philosophical aspects of hunting vs animal cruelty and whatnot, which is why I don't think we ought to legislate too strictly on either since it's a bit subjective. I just contend that if you think it's fun to watch something writhe in pain, you're a little screwed up.
