While it is too soon to say that Rutgers will not make the championship game, if it remains the lone undefeated, top-ranked team after all the bowl games are over, it clearly will be the "National Champion" regardless of who wins the title game. All this argues for some kind of playoff system or some arbitrary set of rules that force a national title game among or with unbeaten teams in the top 10 regardless of the final BCS standings. Otherwise we will continue to have "unresolved" issues and controversies about who really is the best team.

I think the reason that is being talked about is that the Rose may decide to replace OSU (this is all assuming OSU beats Michigan next week) or Southern Cal with Michigan first (due to Big 10 history). If that happens, I'm sure the other bowls would want to prevent a Michigan-ND rematch since they played against each other in the regular season.

It depends on who the Rose wants. I'm thinking they pick based on $$ rather than tradition, but who knows?

Of course if Michigan beats OSU next week, that calculus is vastly changed because OSU and ND haven't played this year and the Rose may be allowed to make such a selection, getting both the Big 10 team and ND (the $$ maker).

If whoever looses the OSU-Mich game is not #2 for the rematch in the national title game, they will go to the Rose Bowl as the Big Ten Represenative.

The only way the Big Ten representitive is an at large bid will be if OSU and Mich re-play for the title.

I think the BCS sucks because Wisconsin will be in the top 8 by the end of all this mess and should be the Big Ten rep by contract (if it is an OSU-Mich rematch) but are locked out of the BCS games.

Not true. The winner of the OSU-UM game is the Big Ten Champ. That means the Rose Bowl has an empty slot and they make the decision of who replaces the Champ. It doesn't have to be whichever team finishes second, though they can pick that team if they wish.

If the Rose Bowl wants Notre Dame, they can pick them over Michigan. They have that right under the BCS.

IIRC, Cal was BCS bowl eligible and that was the year where there was a big hubbub because Texas was chosen as an at large even though Cal was ranked higher in both human polls.

My dream scenario: Michigan crushes the hairy nuts, then wins a thriller in the NC game - I'd rather beat USC, but would settle for beating UF. OSU & ND can lose their bowl games - unless they play each other, in which case I want a low-scoring tie. There won't be any undefeated teams besides the Wolverines.

For the record, USC usually has some hot Song Girls. Unlike many other schools' pom pom girls, they fill out their sweaters.

It really looks to me like the winner of USC-ND plays the winner of OSU-Michigan. I doubt Florida will win out, but if it does, then they may get the nod over ND but not USC.

I would prefer that we not have an ND-Michigan rematch for the title, but that might be the result. Even though I grew up in Ohio, as an ND fan, I have no special dislike for Michigan. But I guess that I'm hoping and expecting that OSU will win on Saturday.

Either way, it's big game time on Saturday, fellas.

For ND to have any hope for the title. It has to beat USC and then hope that UF loses another game. If UF goes through with only one loss, they get the nod over ND.

I agree that that's the way things are shaking out. ND's hopes for the title are still faint, but they're a lot higher than last week.

Rutgers and Arkansas are still in the mix too.
