  • The NCAA's SOS rankings don't take into consideration the location of the games, among other things (it's based on a simple W-L of opponents). Sagarin's do.

It's not tough at all to rubbish the NCAA rankings and defend Sagarin's, but as a gotcha exercise, I approve of your research, Imran.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • how does sangarin do his sos anyway? it seems that it would be a bit of a circular system where the SOS of other schools contributes to your SOS?

CBS's does take into location of home games, IIRC. And if it is not tough to rubbish the NCAA rankings and defend Sagarin's then go ahead and do it. Saying it doesn't take into account location of games doesn't do it.

And how about CBS Sportsline rankings?

I find a SOS ranking that ranks one conference so high to be fatally flawed.

So do I, with the exception of the roles being reversed as far as who was doing the woodshedding.

          • Alright, since I've been ripping on Arizona so much in this thread, I've gotta give a shout out to Arizona basketball, who is opening the season at UVA. Lute and the gang will play ANYBODY, which is respectable. That said, go Virginia!

I'm sure there are some that I'm forgetting.
Do you know anything? Against USC we started Robert Johnson at quarterback. Darren McFadden played injured. And the team was not working together. We dropped five turnovers that night.

Since then, Arkansas is on a 9 game win streak, we have thoroughly dominated much-vaunted #2 and #13 teams and Steve Spurrier. We have two capable quarterbacks with Dick and Mustain, McFadden and Jones are the most productive pair in the nation, and that's not even half of our star names (Monk, Hillis, Williams, Butu, Houston...) Add ballsy HC Houston Nutt and offensive wizard Gus Malzahn on top of the players. If the teamwork keeps going, we control our destiny.

Dan stick to "let the good times roll" threads. Leave football trolling to Drake, at least he's funny.

Beating a grossly overrated Auburn team and a Tennessee squad forced to start a freshman backup quarterback due to injury isn't that impressive...

Excluding Auburn and Tennessee, the combined record of Arkansas' opponents in those nine games is 25-41. Only one of those teams currently has a winning record (Alabama at 6-5) and that stretch included a I-AA team (Southeast Missouri State) and a SunBelt team (Louisiana Monroe). The Auburn game will end up being Arkansas' only road game against a team with a winning record. Clearly, Arkansas has the easiest schedule of any team still in the hunt for the national title...

                • Arkansas needed a loss or two to Arizona to get Drake's attention.

                  • Arizona is 5-5, better than 5 of Arkansas' opponents and equal to the Spurrier-led South Carolina team that mrmitchell is so proud of beating. And Arizona plays in the deepest conference in the country this year, so it hasn't even had the chance to rack up easy wins like Arkansas' I-AA, SunBelt and SEC opponents...

edit: This is a new arena for the Cavaliers, by the way. At least it should be, because they built one. Thus the hype I'm giving it. Plus it's ACC basketball, which is something we're good at.

                      • weve already contested the pac 10 being the deepest conference.

Yeah, but you jackasses don't know what you're talking about. Stanford is the only truly bad team out of the ten...

                          • There are no excuses for scheduling Southeast Missouri. I am deeply disappointed in the University for that.

But it's in Arkansas State University's interests and a lot of other people in AR for the Sun Belt to improve, so Arkansas does what it can by giving Louisiana-Monroe a "home" game in Little Rock and helping their average crowd over NCAA minimum 15,000.

I don't know what the other D-IA is that y'all were complaining about earlier, though.
