Even Mayor Daley of Chicago thought the comment was stupid. While he's nothing special he is a reasonably powerful Democrat that was probably trying to distance all the democrat in Chicago up for reelection from the comment. And Daley has never been accused of being brilliant. But he's smart enough to know it was stupid.
So it really doesn't matter what he meant to say, it's what he ended up saying. And it was stupid. And more stupid that he didn't figure it out and issue a real apology right away, and them maybe people would have let it go.
For all you that think some are making too big a deal about it, you're probably right. But most of you have no problems continually pointing out that GW is a jackass and harping on it again and again, so please give us the same pleasure and letting us point out that Kerry is one also. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. She was a convicted pick-axe murderer. I'm all for mocking those, although maybe, as the Governor, he should've kept silent on that particular occasion. The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

But why do you bring it up in the context of having to apologize? Do you think George Bush should have apologized to the murderer? If not, what exactly remains of your er, point?
Bush meant what he said, and while I'd agree that it wasn't the smartest thing to do for a man in his position, should he concern himself with hurting the feelings of a murderer? Is it in any way comparable to what Kerry did? I'd say no.

The implication of not apologizing for a prceived insult is that the insult was intentional.
Bush probably meant what he said about the murderer on death row. If called upon to apologize, I doubt he would say he was misunderstood and really making a joke about Kerry.
IF Kerry didn't mean to insult the troops, which I doubt he did, he should have sincerely apologized the second the issue was brought up.

Who is this guy libs keep fawning over? Ohhh, MSNBC.
Hmmm, appears to be comparing Republicans to the pro-slavery senator who broke his cane beating an abolitionist senator into half to death.
Appears to me the analogy is more accurately that Bush bashers keep sending replacements for the canes Kerry and others keep breaking over their own heads trying to bash Bush.
I've said it before:
That's the problem with the Democrats. They don't actually want the conflict to end, the killings to stop, and the soldiers to come home. No, they would rather keep them there and exploit the political milage.
What's worse, these guys think that if they win Congress and the White House the terrorists will turn around and say, "Hey, you guys really are good people. I guess we were attacking the wrong folks. Sorry about the bombs and beheadings and all."(\__/) Save a bunny, eat more Smurf!

He will have to apologise at some point; his insisting that he's been misunderstood just doesn't ring true with a whole lot of people.
Doesn't matter. The only people who care about this are weasels. My hardcore republican buddy showed me the picture of the troops with the sign, which is funny, and otherwise didn't care. No one really cares, other than partisan hacks on one side and weasels on the other.
It is pretty sad that people think comments from someone in the cheap seats are more important than the words and actions of the man on stage. I guess it goes a long way to explaining GWB's success."I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." - Clarence Darrow

OK, now I have to comment. This bull even made it to Austrian news. It was covered on a double page artcile where it was claimed that this "incident" seriously could alter the results of the upcoming elections.
Sorry, but how ****ed up do voters have to be that a dumb comment may outweigh the political and moral failure of the Republicans in the past year. And how ****ed up are your media to blow this hot air up and make it appear a serious election topic?
Not even in Austria something that pathetic would be taken up.
Kerry was, is and will be a dork. He isn't currently up for vote, is he? So what's the fuzz?"The world is too small in Vorarlberg". Austrian ex-vice-chancellor Hubert Gorbach in a letter to Alistar [sic] Darling, looking for a job...

The fact that Kerry enraged these same people is what makes this a possible election changer. It's not that it swayed people in how they were going to vote but moreover gave emphasis to those who were thinking about sitting this one out to teach the repugs a lesson to instead go to the polls."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

There are alot of races that are within the margin of error or 2-3%. Now picture the soccer Mom with a kid over in Iraq. She agrees with Dems on some issues and Republicans on others. Her main issue though is her son. She was about ready to vote Democratic because she think the war is being mishandled by the Republicans. Then, arguably, the leader of the Democratic party comes out and coldly insults her son as she sees it. Then refuses to apologize about it. So she switches her vote to Republican.
Thats a double dip. -1 Democrat +1 Republican. I can see this happening with just about anybody who has family or friends over their. If this situation is 1 out of 100 thats a 2% switch. Add to that regenerating the base (maybe 1%-2%) and as silly as it sounds from an overall perspective (Kerry's dumb joke changing the election) from a micro-perspective it is fairly plausible that it could impact quite a few races.

Why would that automatically be a +1 for the Republican when the Republicans* put her son there in the first place? Why not just not vote for either?
*Yes, yes. Dems voted yea on the resolution too, but the Reps are johnny-come-latelys to speaking out against the war.The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

My scenario was that she was going to vote Democrat and switched to Republican. That is -1 democrat + 1 republican.
I have seen people like this interviewed. One woman said she was reading an email from her son in Iraq telling her how he could be contacted for the next few days when she heard the comment. She went on to say that she was going to vote democrat because she didn't like how the war was going. Then, to quote her, "John Kerry's comment felt like a slug to the gut" She went on to say she was going to vote Republican now. If she were a non-voter or undecided before the comment it would have been +1 Republican. But she was a Democratic voter before the comment. Therefore it is a -1 Democrat +1 Republican.Last edited by Deity Dude; November 3, 2006, 22:01.
