Hey Goldmember, Hey Goldmember!
Race is still, unfortunately, a big deal at my church (Which is 99.X% african american). But I understand.. as the mean age is over 50. They experienced things that I read about in history books.
It is also, much more unfortunately, a big deal to some of my freinds.. who are (to varying degrees) racist. That being true, however, the younger generation is a lot less racist than the older.

GENERATION 35: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
and I get sick and tired of people thinking racism is an american issue only, or a southern issue.
The most racist person I know is European. Very racist against albanians and mexicans (I'm sure there are more groups this person is racist against, but I know of 2 for sure). I've never met an american (my age) who was that racist against blacks. I just never see it. Even when I lived in the south I never saw it. Never saw one instance of racism in the south. Granted, most of the racists probably just keep it to themselves, and know better than to display their racism in public. And yes I'm assuming that displaying a confederate flag is not racism (not directly at least)
As for the confederate flag (to actually get back on topic), I think it's silly to compare it to the swastica. Sure the Ku Klux Klan used it, but they never killed 6 million people. The degree of severity is just much less with a confederate flag. I'm not saying people have never done bad things while displaying the flag, but the severity is much less.
Is it racism? Indirectly, I believe it is. But I think most people who display it don't really know what it means. They only do it because other people do it. They aren't necessarily racist. People are sheep. They only do what other people are doing. It would be silly to say there is abolutely no racist connotations behind the flag in every situtation, but displaying the flag is not the same as carrying a sign saying: "I'm a racist".
That said, I think the flag is silly, and I don't know why people like it. The hilarious thing is these people claim to be patriots. You are either with us or against us (I'm kidding here, but I'm using their logic). You either support the U.S., or you don't. Don't go supporting some bull**** goverment that lasted less than 4 years.
edit: yes the above post seems contradictory, perhaps I'm not explaining myself fully here. Sometimes I have trouble expressiong thoughts into words. But every situation is different. You just can't go around calling every redneck displaying a confederate flag a racist. Some people are just too stupid to realize what message they are conveying by flying the flag.
Patroklos and Slowwy -- if the Confederate flag's history has nothing to do with racism then why don't Southern blacks show the same pride in their region by proudly displaying the Confederate flag?
And I found it humorous that Kuci has declared that racism no longer exists among his generation in the South.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
It was one of many tenants, but I suppose that is what the US was founded on to. All that other stuff was also just meaningless semantics.
I am so glad Tass and Che as mind readers and can instantly tell the internal motivations of millions of people on a whim. Thanks for telling me what I was thinking guys, as I guess you are a better judge than me!
And Che, Tass, Mr Fun automatically lose for bringing up Nazis, even if it was in a completely inappropriate comparison.
Just look up quotes by the president, vice-president, and other political leaders of the Confederacy when they talked about the founding principles of their nation.
The Founding Fathers of the United States in the late 18th century certainly included a number of slave owners. But to say that Southern Americans founded the Confederacy on the same principles as the 18th century founders is ridiculous.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

Burlington doesn't count as South.

Indeed. Seperate but equal The blacks can have the run-down cities we abandoned because they started to protest being second class citizens. We'll just monopolize the economic resources and live in prosperity
that's just stupid
Obviously they wouldn't be flying it in support of Nazism, they'd be flying it to show their cultural identity.
We had a group visiting my workplace from Georgia not long ago. There were even numbers of blacks and whites.
A handful of the whites approached one of our waitresses, and asked "We would much prefer it if you could seat us apart, by color".
The waitress almost lost it.
Just exactly why would these racist whites not just sit apart rather than advertise their opinions. The obvious solutions are that they were racist and making it perfectly clear that they were so (in which case why did they travel with blacks at all) or this is a bunch of bull****. Personally I think it's the latter.
I live in the heart of the south and I saw more overt racists in Sweden than I have here.
