We are refusing two way talks because it will give them an opportunity to set up a situation then blame us when it all goes down. Their Stalinist negotiating tactics were legendary during the Korean War. In 6-way talks it becomes more difficult for them to pull their dirty tricks, especially on the allies who taught them how to do it in the first place.

I'm not too scared about this whole situation. Kim Jong-il is an evil man but he's not a stupid man, what he wants is MAD and he's willing to pay a high price for it and MAD will keep things from getting bloody.

What has he done that's stupid? If you assume that his top priority is to assure a luxorious and secure lifestyle for himself and his progeny and that he doesn't give a rat's ass about the people of NK his actions have been fairly rational.

I'm not saying we should humor them with 2-way talks, I was just adding some perspective. Both leaders, not just KJI, are "refusing talks."

IIUC the US has talked directly with Nkor within the 6 power framework. They want direct talks outside the 6 power framework. Since that would exclude countries that actually have leverage over Nkor, the rationale for that demand is obvious.
