  • I note that Israel drops leaflets before making major attacks in the current operation, therefore sacrificing strategic surprise.

4 killed when Israel bombs U.N. post

BEIRUT, Lebanon - A U.N. observer post was hit by an Israeli airstrike in south Lebanon Tuesday, killing four peacekeepers, U.N. officials said.

A bomb directly hit the building and shelter of an Indian patrol base from the observer force in the town of Khiyam near the eastern end of the border with
Israel, said Milos Struger, spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon known as UNIFIL.

U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said in New York that the Security Council was informed that four officers with UNIFIL were killed, but he had no other information.

"We're obviously very sorry," Boltin said. "We're attempting to get information where we can to confirm the nature of the incident."

Struger also said there were 14 other incidents of firing close to this position from the Israeli side Tuesday afternoon. "The firing continued even during the rescue operation," he said.

Since Israel launched a massive military offensive against Lebanon and Hezbollah guerrillas July 12, an international civilian employee working with UNIFIL and his wife have been killed in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas in the southern port city of Tyre.

Five UNIFIL soldiers and one military observer have also been wounded, Struger said.

But a day after criticizing Israel for "disproportionate" strikes against civilians, U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland accused Hezbollah of "cowardly blending" among Lebanese civilians.

"Consistently, from the Hezbollah heartland, my message was that Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending ... among women and children," Egeland said. "I heard they were proud because they lost very few fighters and that it was the civilians bearing the brunt of this. I don't think anyone should be proud of having many more children and women dead than armed men."
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Maybe. The force has acted to aid and abet Hezbollah in the past.

What else can you expect? If they get out in the open, in the woods or the plains outside Israel will blast the crap out of them by the zillions. They haven't got a real standing army like ISrael has. It's not a pretty thing, but it's sound strategy on their part. Besides, there are other solutions to this than simply dropping bombs.

Here's a constantly updated map with confirmed hits on Lebanon. Where else can Hezbollah hide, in such a small country after all?

Probably a lot more than American conservatives care.

                          • Is UR's habbit of deflecting criticism of whatever group he supports by trying to get people to start talking about America (or some subgroup of America) no matter how tangentialy it maybe related to the topic at hand a common disease of communists?

And if we'd tried to deal with it in 1776, there'd have been no revolution, as the South wouldn't have declared indpendnence. And if we tried to deal with it in 1787, the country would have fallen apart, because the Constitution would never have been ratified.

Maybe if we'd confronted the issue before the raid on Harper's Ferry but after the Mexican American war. We really only had a very short time to deal with the issue without a massive civil war, from the time when the expansion of slavery became a serious issue and when the South began to arm itself. Before that and we'd not have existed any longer.

Though I don't have any doubts Hezbollah uses the same tactics as Hamas.
