You'll get screwed on price anyway . They'll release Season 2.5 and probably a "box set" with 2.0 and 2.5 for $50 or something.

You can watch Sci Fi Channel shows through Sci Fi Pulse, though it doesn't appear you get to choose what episode.

Current BSG episode is "Scar," #28 (2.15).

2.0 is $40, and I haven't seen it for any less (though I haven't checked online...)

I'm gambling that there will be a good offer for 2.0 when 2.5 is released. Or that the box set will be cheaper than getting both of them.

        ...might save me $15-20.

        I can wait

and I'd rather watch it on a TV rather than a computer screen. I can get the surround sound that way

You mean you don't have at least a 5.1 speaker system for your computer?

            You should

            $35 at Amazon.

Though I hadn't realized it was that much (I was thinking it was $30 for some reason)

Hopefully, but you can never be sure.

I don't have surround sound (on my TV or computer), but I got a 30'' HDTV and a 17'' 4:3 LCD... I'll go for the 30'' High Def picture.

We are well behind in the UK on this one I think, but I can download some episodes if it's good. I haven't watched any sci-fi since Voyager ended, and I fancy giving this a shot if it's good.

The general verdict here seems to be favourable. How does it stack up against TNG, DS9, Voyager and B5, my favourite sci-fi series?

It's the best show on tv currently, not only scifi-wise. Try it

I am really tempted to get 2.0, but I know I will get screwed on price when the rest of season 2 comes out.

                  Until then, it's watching Firefly...

I really wasn't an avid watcher of TNG, DS9, Voyager, or B5. Though I have seen a number of TNG on late night reruns .

Some one else will have to answer it, though I can say that BG is far more dark than TNG, though I guess the subject matter lends itself to darkness.

Better. No reset button. Darker. Grittier. Kickass score.

                      DS9,
Better. Remember In The Pale Moonlight? BSG's more like that.

                      Voyager
                      Waaaaaay better.

and B5, my favourite sci-fi series?
It's not as good as B5 yet, which is my favourite too. BSG has a good shot at surpassing it in season 3, however.

Thanks, I hope more will weigh in with opinions as well.

Actually, one series I never really watched is Stargate. Since we have a lot of sci-fi addicts here how does that compare? I saw a few episodes, but it never impressed.

Sounds promising. DS9 and B5 were both grittier (well DS9 gritty for the trek universe) with continuing story arcs, and I really liked that.

                            Story arcs

Oh, and before I forget, BG is willing to take great risks in the storyline. Check out the end of Season 2 for examples of that. But the preview of Season 3 make it look like it will work out very nicely .

Stargate is light entertainment, I managed to watch it for a whole eight seasons, mainly thanks to Richard Dean Anderson. After RDA left the show, it's been boring and not worth my time.

BSG has a lot of story arcs going on. There's the series-long arc, the season-long arcs, several arcs that last many episodes, and episode-long arcs. Arcs everywhere! Whereas a show like TNG only had one ep (sometimes two parter) arcs, and a very shallow and distant series wide arc with a few season arcs (like the alien conspiracy to infiltrate the Federation).

Yes, it's absolutely lovable how BSG manages its arcs. It doesn't really tend to do those one-off episodes the events in which are never mentioned again and have no consequences.

What I like even more is that BSG doesn't use any classic sci-fi escapes. Like, the "it was an alternate reality" or the "it was a dream" solutions. Nor are there ever technobabble-based deus ex machina. This has to be one of the worst things about Stargate, it just ends with a deux ex machina way too often.
