The search for Earth is an important plot device. Not as in the actual Earth, but because that is what keeps most survivors motivated.
The worst ending they could probably have is to find Earth, be met by the Terran Space Fleet under the command of Admiral Kirkski, which would proceed to kick Cylon ass.
IF they end the show with finding Earth, then let the last moments just show the fleet approaching the planet.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

That's true... if we just see Earth and they haven't contacted Galactica, then its not like uber-super future where they'd be able to find out that there is a spaceship in the solar system pretty quicky.
Maybe put them entering a system called "The Milky Way" after dealing with the Cylons and just fade out after that?
Though I agree that the search for Earth is a very important plot device. Especially after the New Caprica debacle.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I'm surprised they haven't considered how unfair to Earth it would be to just show up with lots of angry Cylons at their heels. At least the original series thought of that problem. Also, if I were the Cylons I'd just keep a distant tail on them and let them find earth for me."And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961

The Galactica and the Twelve Colonies are in the Milky Way. There's conclusive on screen proof of this,Spoiler:in the Tomb of Athena the nebula they use to determine where Earth is looks the same from Earth, which allows us to guesstimate their location pretty well, it's in the Cygnus arm of the galaxy.Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. My lord... that's whole entire levels of nerdiness above the rest of us .“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

If the Colonies are just that, colonies of earth, then that should imply that Earth is at a much higher tech level than the Colonies. At least that's what the Colonials are hoping.
Then again, I always thought the helmets the pilots wore had an ancient Egyptian look to them. If so, then their origins on earth were pre-Egyptian (Atlantean perhaps?).
It would be interesting to see if the new series shows earth at the same tech level as the old series did."And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961

Sounds like the Colonials are doomed to eventual failure. Wonder if the new series will have Dr. Z in it? He was the son of Starbuck from what I remember."And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961

That's pretty much how I saw it.
I hope they can put at least 5 good seasons together but at the rate they are going their characters are really getting the crap kicked out of them and it would be hard to stretch it for 5 seasons. Something though occured to me that with their plot device of skipping some time they have perhaps found a way to reinvent the show every season or two assuming skipping a year or two doesn't get old. It will also be interesting if they are really prepared to kill off some characters and keep them dead to show the attrition.
Spoiler:Cain was a perfect example. I'm sure many would have liked to see more of her but the conflict between her and adama would have never been solved. I actually liked the character but thought it took some nerve to kill her off
Possible next season spoiler
Spoiler:word is that i've seen is that one of the cylon models may be killed off for good. don't know how since they download to another body but thats what some of the cast and writers mentioned at the recent con.Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. It'd still piss me off, though, because I'd like at least some sort of hint as to what sort of time they've showed up in. If they don't receive anything on the wireless as they get progressively closer... assuming wireless is radio, that is. Maybe it isn't, but if we're talking about our universe with its physics and everything, what else could it be?Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief.
