The evidence now available on these changes has led a number of observers to call the present situation a "demographic crisis." The public and the government are concerned about the detrimental effects that demographic trends may have on economic reform and development--for example, how a shrinking working-age population will support a growing number of elderly and the demands that the latter will make on the social safety net.

Hell, you couldn't even do anything about our bombing of Kosovo. All you did was send one frigate and scream curse words at us.

Sorry, but I can't seriously comment such pearls as "Beginning in late 1999, Putin created a virtual presidential dictatorship".

No, it's not much stronger economically. Italy is actually weaker than Canada economically.

Italy does have more people, true, but does not influence world affairs any more than Canada does, and I think we could have a debate over whether Canada has more pull.

I just finished playing Russia in 2006 september China advance vs Russia delay, and completely pwned them I had a platoon of T-80U's and a motor rifle company plus a battery of MLRS and two KA50 attack choppers. They sent like a friggin Mech rifle battalion plus attached armor co. plus follow up foot infantry, about two companies strength. Some 40 year old jets tried even to bomb me

Italian economy is about a 60% larger. And sorry, Canada influence in world affairs is zero, so i dont know as Italy influence can be less than zero. And militarly Canada is laughable.

I'll be curious to see the most recent numbers with the impact of $70 oil. It wouldn't be anywhere near enough to catch Italy but given that Canada is just over half the Italian population, its not too bad economically. . . . and I know GDP per capita is highest in little city states etc etc-- that does not mean that its entirely useless when comparing larger democracies

While Canada doesn't meddle much and doesn't have influence in old colonial empires, I've always understood Canada to be a respected peacekeeper and conciliator. Canada has been in the Security Council every bit as much as Italy .

I often bemoan our lack of military spending but it appears the current government is attempting to set things right by funding needed equipment. Our military is doing a lot of the tough slogging in Afghanistan right now and all reports are that they are doing pretty well.

Oh and a point on the military-- Canada has never been conquered. Seems they have done all right despite any perceived shortcomings
