If G8 was all about GDP per capita, it would have been a G8 of Luxembourg, Monaco and alike.

Forex and gold reserves don't mean squat either. China has huge forex reserves. It's not rich.

Who cares if they had a much, much lesser GDP per capita than Iceland ? They launch their own spacemen, Iceland doesn't.

A strong Russia might just be a good thing as a counter to China. I'd hate to see the Finlandization of Russia or watch them turn into a doormat for China. If the mess on their border ever starts up again Russia must be ready, and I doubt they are.

Right now, and for the forseeable future, Russia can kick China's ass militarily. The world's view of China's power is hugely inflated - fact remains, they have a rickety, largely obsolete military.
