If G8 was all about GDP per capita, it would have been a G8 of Luxembourg, Monaco and alike.

Forex and gold reserves don't mean squat either. China has huge forex reserves. It's not rich.
    China is not rich?
Who cares if they had a much, much lesser GDP per capita than Iceland ? They launch their own spacemen, Iceland doesn't.

        • Man, I wish Canada could launch it's own spacemen while most of our population lived in crushing poverty. Would we ever be rich then! Maybe we could make nukes too so we could be wealthy like North Korea.

          • Yep. Too bad The Russians can't project power anymore, and therefore they are nothing on the world stage.

What do we rate here importance and might of countries or prosperity of individuals?

                • A strong Russia might just be a good thing as a counter to China. I'd hate to see the Finlandization of Russia or watch them turn into a doormat for China. If the mess on their border ever starts up again Russia must be ready, and I doubt they are.

Right now, and for the forseeable future, Russia can kick China's ass militarily. The world's view of China's power is hugely inflated - fact remains, they have a rickety, largely obsolete military.

When you're talking about how rich a country is, generally the latter.

Tis true. When was the last time your carrier left the Barents Sea? 2000? 1999?

Hell, you couldn't even do anything about our bombing of Kosovo. All you did was send one frigate and scream curse words at us.

Consequently, the population growth rate in Russia has become negative, life expectancy appears to be decreasing, and the population has been aging rapidly. The evidence now available on these changes has led a number of observers to call the present situation a "demographic crisis." The public and the government are concerned about the detrimental effects that demographic trends may have on economic reform and development--for example, how a shrinking working-age population will support a growing number of elderly and the demands that the latter will make on the social safety net.
