There are, of course, veterans who don't pan out. (Quick, who has the Canes' largest cap figure? Hint: it's not Staal, Ward, Recchi, Stillman, or anyone else who's been remotely useful to the franchise.) In the same vein, there are young players who are expected to improve but never do.
