Why don't you pick the actually good defensive teams? Like, Calgary.
I was going to go alphabetical, but Montreal was on whimsey.

And I'm not thinking soley about Phaneuf. Look at Calgary's entire d-corps, the mainstays of Calgary's defense are all 20-somethings.

You don't have to be 30-something to be a good defenceman. Coaching makes a huge difference.

Phaneuf has had Sutters as coaches for years, so why is it a surprise that he's as good as he is defensively? Calgary is turning into a defenseman-factory due to the coaching job the defensive players are getting.

You don't have to be 32 to be a good defenseman if you've got a good system and good coaching staff.

Marshall, 35yo, 23 games played (hella'lot of scratches), Missed 2 games (nose injury). 11th season
        O'Donnell, 34yo, 78 games played (3 scratches, 2 suspended). 10th season
        Niedermayer, 32yo, 82 games played. 14th season
Salei, 31yo, 78 games played. Missed 4 games (orbital fracture). 8th season
DiPenta, 27yo, 72 games played (10 scratches). Rookie
Beauchemin, 26yo, 72 games played (10 scratches). Rookie
        Vishnevski, 26yo, 82 games played. 5th season

Notice the 26 and 27yo rookies? That's because a lot of dmen take a long time to develop. Many are just getting reliable at 30.

Calgary has a GM with a philosophy.

His philosophy got no further than that in Detroit this year.

          • OK, but only 'cause you asked.

            Calgary

Marchment, 37yo, 37 games played (15 scratches). Missed 8 games (rib injury) 16 games (knee injury). 16th season
Hamrlik, 32yo, 51 games played. Missed 12 games (knee injury) 6 games (knee injury) 13 games (hand injury). 12th season
Hulse, 32yo, 39 games played (37 scratches). Missed the last 6 games (shoulder injury). 9th season
Warrener, 30yo, 61 games played. Missed 3 games (knee injury) 17 games (sprained MCL). 9th season
            Ference, 27yo, 82 games played. 5th season
Regehr, 26yo, 68 games played. Missed 14 games (sprained knee). 5th season
Leopold, 25yo, 74 games played. Missed 8 games (groin). 3rd season
Giordano, 22yo, 7 games played (1 scratch). Up and down rookie
Phaneuf, 21yo, 82 games played. Rookie

            What a tale of woe.

Now I understand why you are so sour on 30, but seriously, Calgary had some seriously ****ed up luck. Or is it luck? You expect every game that every man is going to go Banzai on the oppo, and you might have the odd head roll over and skid to a halt in front of the bench, ya think?

Maybe you should floridate the water.

Oh, and stop trading young players away!

Bouillon, 30yo, 67 games played. Missed 15 games (ankle injury). 5th season
                Dandenault, 30yo, 82 games played. 9th season. 1st time he's played 82 games, btw
Souray, 29yo, 75 games played. Missed 4 games (groin) and a few elsewhere. 6th season
Streit, 28yo, 48 games played. Missed 3 games (flu) and a lot of scratches. Rookie
Markov, 27yo, 67 games played. Missed 8 games (shoulder injury) and 4 more for others. 4th season
Cote, 24yo, 8 games played. Rookie
Komisarek, 24yo, 71 games played. Missed 10 games (personal reasons). 2nd season

Hmmm. 28yo rookie. Could it be dmen don't break in as soon as forwards?

Notice the older ones play more?

Phaneuf is not the norm. He is a monster. Sutter did very well getting him, but not many work out like that.
This example is so bad, but I enjoy this debate, so I won't point out why.

                • Well, I hate to interrupt all this "fun," but Huet just re-signed with Montreal. 2 years: 3 million the first, 2.75 million the second. (As seen on tsn.ca.)

                  Kudos to the Habs.

                  • Where does that leave Aebischer? I can't imagine he wants to revert to a backup, and he's set to make almost $2 million. Trade bait?

He has publically stated that he will refuse any backup duties. But Gainey has expressed a desire for him to stay. He'll probably throw a tantrum and get traded in July.

                        Detroit or Tampa, probably?

                        • Of course, there's still Biron, Cloutier, and Gerber to go around. Are there any other teams in desperate need of a goalie? If not, we could see one of these guys forced to take a backup position somewhere.

                              • There's a lot of BS flying around now.

Why, oh why did Pronger make the trade request public? Really stupid if he thought it would pressure Lowe. It is going to do more to tarnish himself, and is very unlikely to rush Lowe as the past weekend demonstrated (said no to Kaberle and Stajan).

Who can tell if it's a load of crap? It's happened before.
