I would be surprised if Vancouver let Carter get away - he is the first player to really work well with the Twins.
Prepare to be surprised, then. Apparently, Carter has received offers from several teams, none of which are Vancouver. Unless he's prepared to take a huge haircut from what he could actually get in the market, he's not coming back.

Edmonton will have a swiss-cheese defense (who is their top d-man now...? who are their competent d-men? Amazing!), overworking Roloson who is already bound for a retirement home. Miss the playoffs.
Toronto overpaid medicore defensemen leaving little to no room for real offensive talent. Miss the playoffs again.
Vancouver...who the hell knows. Nonis has to trade many players to even get a field-able team, so it's up in the air.

4 first round picks and a second round pick. 2 first rounders already made.
Lupul is already a proven asset with nowhere to go but up.
Smid is very highly regarded. THN had him the 10th best prospect not yet in the NHL. He'll need experience, but he's better than most of the D prospects out there. The Oilers know about him, and Lowe expects him to be able to play this year.
A for sure #1 pick next year.
A very probable #1 pick the in 2008 and a guaranteed #2.
We gave up one of the top 3 D in the world, but we are getting some pay back in the now and even more in the future.
Ahaheim are giving up some scoring now and a lot of future. They are getting back the piece to give them the best D corps in the world, bar none, now.
I think it has the potential of being a win-win trade when we look back 5 years from now.
Prediction, just to get the juices flowing.
Anaheim go to the finals and maybe win the cup in 2006-07.
Edmonton wins a cup within 4 years.
And it started with this trade (or rather a year ago when Edmonton gave up 3 D for Pronger).
The #1 picks won't be very good, they'll be in the late 20s. Anaheim is going to do very, very well next season.

But it's good to know already that the drafts the next few years won't have any good players in them. I'll get right on the phone and tell KLowe that Asher said so.

Honest question though, Edmonton's defense...
Who would be the top pairing there?
Not done yet.
There is going to be at least one UFA signed, maybe two.
Thing is, while everyone else is looking at what Edmonton did with defence (and going on a D feeding frenzy) KLowe is looking at what Carolina did with offence. And the Oilers are now loaded.

That is, if Pouliot is even a center. I'm not sure about that. And I don't know if Rem Murray is coming back. Rumour is he could be opting to retire again.

Make no mistake: the trade is not the end of the world. It's just tremendously disappointing that we have to back to square 1/rebuilding stage after making it to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. But we'll do what we have to, I guess.
My only further question would be: if we are truly rebuilding, why sign Roloson? We might as well try and trade for Biron or another younger goalie that might actually be around when we get good.

Acquiring Pronger, 31, gives the Ducks another Norris Trophy winner to play with Scott Niedermayer on the Anaheim defence. More likely, it means that either Niedermayer or Pronger will be on the ice at virtually all times for the Ducks. Pronger ranked fourth in the league with 27:59 of ice time last season, while Niedermayer ranked ninth with 25:30.
In addition to strong defensive play, Pronger is going to be a vital component of the Ducks power play considering 42 of his 56 points in 2005-2006 came with the man advantage. Look for Pronger to put up another 50-60 points in Anaheim next season.
Pronger is priced somewhat reasonably, considering the market that has been established for top defencemen, at $6.25-million per season for the next four years.
Francois Beauchemin would be the Anaheim defenceman that figures to lose some power play time because of Pronger's arrival, though the Ducks might also feel there isn't as much need to have centre Ryan Getzlaf manning the point either. Even if his overall power play time doesn't decrease, Beauchemin may spend more time with the second unit, which might make it tough to match his breakthrough 36-point campaign.
The loss of Lupul will not only create opportunity, but expectations, for Dustin Penner. The promising power forward had an excellent postseason (nine points in 13 games), not to mention a terrific AHL season (84 points in 57 games), so he could be ready to blossom into a 25-30 goal scorer.
The Oilers get: Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid a 2007 first-round pick, a conditional first-round pick and a 2008 second-round pick.
Bringing in Edmonton native Lupul gives the Oilers yet another young scoring star to join Shawn Horcoff, Jarret Stoll, Ales Hemsky and Rob Schremp in Edmonton. If Lupul and Schremp are both among the top six forwards next year, Raffi Torres could find himself on a checking line.
A strong playoff after a 28-goal, 53-point season bodes well for Lupul's future. Considering he's just 22, it's not unreasonable to think he could score 30 goals and 60 points next year, with potential for even greater numbers in the future.
Also keep in mind that by dealing Pronger, the Oilers now have maximum flexibility under the salary cap so they can not only match any prospective offers to restricted free agents Lupul, Horcoff, Stoll and Hemsky, but it also gives the Oilers room to make offers to other free agents, whether it is re-signing Jaroslav Spacek or Sergei Samsonov, or pursuing others around the league.
Lupul earned $900,600 in Anaheim last season.
Smid is one of the top defence prospects in hockey and should be able to crack the Oilers' opening night lineup. While he's not going to quarterback the power play like Pronger, Smid does have good size, makes good decisions with the puck and should eventually be a top-four defenceman.
Marc-Andre Bergeron will continue to see a lot of power play ice time, and Jarret Stoll handles some point minutes as well, but the Oilers will likely want a veteran who can handle more power play time -- either re-signing Spacek or Dick Tarnstrom or dealing for someone else.
For a power play that was ranked 14th in the league last season, the Oilers can't just lose their leading power play point man and not address the position.
In the long-run, the Oilers are looking at a 2007 first-round pick and 2008 second-round pick in addition to a conditional first-round pick as well. Assuming that the Ducks will end up in the uppper echelon of the league, the Oilers might be looking at a pick in the mid-20s.
From 2000-2002, the following players were taken with mid-to-late-20s picks: Brad Boyes, Steve Ott, Niklas Kronwall, Justin Williams, Lukas Krajicek, Alexander Perezhogin, Jason Bacashihua, Alexander Steen, Cam Ward and Hannu Toivonen.
Once the Oilers make their picks this deal can fully be evaluated, but in the meantime, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe did an admirable job in acquiring assets when forced to deal his best player.

Biron won't be around in 4 years.
Dubnyk will be, and Roli is not the worst guy to have around for bringing along a rookie (his technical game is his strength).
Also, have to have some continuity and throw the odd bone to the fans. Georges may not be back, and that has some people upset.
