    • Great game. Not technically brilliant but great nonetheless.

It looks like simovic got three yellows !
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

      • Damn, what a match!! Go Ozzies!

And what the frak was Poll smoking? He's usually one of the best refs in Europe but that was plain awfull...

I wonder how many matches you get banned when you get 3 yellow cards in one match

        • Well, given the way play was going it's a credit to the ref that it didnt deteriorate into a scrum (especially with the aussies playing).

          • He didn't get three cards in one match; he got two in this match and had another yellow carrying over from the last match. I think he sits the next two international games, whenever those happen to be (since Croatia's out of the tournament now).

So the Aussies go through and face the Azzurri next. This should be interesting. I think they can fly with Italy (but whether they can win is another story).

            • reis, he got three in the match. The ref just forgot to show him the red after the second.

              • OK

So the draw looks like this

                German Sweden
                Argentina Mexico

                Italy Australia
                SK/Fr/Swiss v Tunisia/Ukraine

                -----------------------------------------------------------

                England Ecuador
                Portugal Netherlands
                Brazil Ghana
                Spain v SK/Fr/Swiss

I have not listed Saudi Arabia as a contender in Group H as they do have a mathematical chance to advance but I think it requires them to beat Spain by 4 or other silly and improbable outcomes

                • Weird... I looked at the official stats before, and it wasn't there, and now it is. OK, whatever.

No, Simunic got a yellow card in the 62', 90' and 93' minute, and was only sent off in the 93' minute.

                    Edit: crosspost.

                    • What hack's division did they scrape that ref from though

Missed a clear handball (more like fist over the top, as we would call it in aussie rules), missed a superb round-the-waist tackle on Viduka, missed the fact that he'd given one player 2 yellows (and gave him a third!), a soft second yellow for Emerton (IMHO).... utter chaos.

I don't deny that the last few minutes would have been difficult to control, but then he's a highly respected international referee...

                      • He was English, so of course he was loathe to help the Aussies by playing fair.

Not to forget: the second Australian goal was offside.

                          • Well, that's more than offset by the fact that they were also denied 2 penalties...

                            • Best game so far!!!!

                              Great fun!!!

I wonder what would have happened if the Aussies lost. It was a judgement (the three yellow's) againt the rules. They may have had to play to replay the last couple of minutes.
IIRC it happened here a couple of years ago too when 12 players instead of 11 were fielded.

If he had anyone with a powerful shot from distance maybe we could play fast counterstrikes and distance shots . The American style really is a hybrid. It isn't totally European, but with Donovan and Beasley really sucking it up (and being outclassed and outhustled), it ended up looking and being that way.
