I'm pretty sure in that case it's the team's responsibility and not the referee's, so the team with 12 players loses 3-0 (and IIRC that's also what happened in the case you're referring to). Not 100% sure on that but 95%.

But yeah, if Australia had lost the match they could've protested and normally it would've had to be replayed either partially or entirely (in the qualifiers Uzbekistan vs Bahrain had to be replayed in its entirety after a referee error halfway into the match). Of course, in this case that would've created huge organisational problems so the FIFA would probably have been cowardice as usual and rejected Australia's claim for practical reasons...

    • Does the official report of the match report 3 yellow cards for Simunic? That must look pretty cool 8)

I assume he'll be extra banned and punished for this
Worst ref ever. If you give a card, you MUST check your administration to see if the player already got one.

I wonder if the result of the game is officially legal since there was a player on the field that doesn't belong there. This story may not be finished yet......

      • Right, so we've separated the wheat from the chaff and the real competition can begin. Who do you guys fancy to win it?

        • Pitty, the official records just don't contain the 90th minute yellow card for Simunic. That stinks. Don't erase the faults of the ref, just give us our official 3 yellow cards in a game report

                  • I have to agree with Locutus, but more politely . England won't win. With Owen down and Rooney just getting into shape, they are dangerously thin at striker. What, Walcott going to pull a Rossi?

Too many quality midfielders, not enough strikers.

                        • Englands only quality midfielders are Gerrard, Joe Cole and Lampard. And they are not a balanced midfield without at least one additional defensive midfielder, such as Hargreaves.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

So they are a balanced midfield then?

                            • Last time I checked the first formation in the midfield was Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham. And even if Sven were to make the wise decision to play Hargreaves, he is no Vieira, Emerson or Cambiasso. Thus England could at best have a midfield with three out of four top notch players.

                              • Of there is a number of quality midfielders in England! Gerrard, J. Cole, Lampard, Beckham, Lennon, Carrick, Hargreaves. Lennon may be young, but he has shown greatness in the minutes he's been on. Beckham does many things not so well, but crosses probably better than anyone else in the world. Carrick and Hargreaves are both pretty good midfielders in their own right.
