Many people unknowingly pour fresh milk down the drain. The date on the label is a "sell by" date for the grocery store. It is not a "use by" date for the consumer. Generally milk is safe andwholesome 7 to 10 days after the date on the label.
So if you get milk 2 weeks before the sell by date, we're talking as much as 24 days of drinkable milk.

logically opening a sealed product might be expected to have a profound effect on it's shelf life
but with refrigerated milk? we're not talking some hermetically sealed product that we open then leave out. of course that would have a profound effect... refrigeration allows opened milk to still be good for some time.

Just smell it if you have a doubt. No big trick to it.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Open-faced refridgerated sections are actually quite efficient at keeping things cold. They use a curtain of cold flowing air to keep warm air out and cold air in. It's emitted from the top and sucked in at the bottom and recycled. I suspect it's better than having doors which let the cold air out and warm are in when opened. Notice how much more condensation there is when opening a freezer door and grabbing some milk.

Nonsense. Opened milk is bound to get spoiled within days in a normal refrigerator which people open a lot to get other food.

Geronimo, if the opened milk is getting sour within days, it's perfectly normal. Happens to me too.

You should buy smaller packages, as Spiffor suggested. 1 litre is probably available. Combat the price by buying more - in Europe, you can get a carton with 10 or 12 1 litre containers relatively cheap. Containers are called "tetrapak" here, after the Swedish brand that invented them, and the milk is treated to be durable for a few weeks or more until opened when it goes sour in a couple of days, as is normal.
