give me sterlized milk over soured milk any day. And I'm saying that without having even tried the sterilized stuff. I just hate soured milk. it's the smell that gets me the most. Couldn't the milk just be irradiated to sterlize it? that shouldn't effect the taste at all.

Yeah, sterilised milk is all chemical-ly and weird tasting...

I think milk, once opened can only survive for 3 or 4 days, something like that... why not buy smaller cartons?

What happens when milk is frozen? I think my mum freezes milk, I'm not sure I've seen her thaw any though...

Who the Hell likes clabbered milk, Geronimo? That's kind of a gimme.

I just wish I didn't have to buy the stuff so frequently and in such tiny portions to avoid that.

the best way to drink milk is fresh. Yep, I'm talking about human breast milk fresh from the ***. mmmm, tasty.

okay I've never drank it (not since I was a baby I suppose), it probably doesn't taste as good as cows milk.

Over here, to avoid that issue, we buy full boxes of 1l bottles of pasteurized milk. If stored properly (ie in a dry and fairly cool place), the pasteurized milk won't spoil for monthes, until you open the bottle.
Once the bottle is opened, you should drink the milk in the next few days, and meanwhile you should put that milk in the fridge)

I drink three gallons of milk a week, so I usually don't have difficulties with spoilage.

Europe is so much more civilized in some regards.

Storing milk in containers that it will spoil in if not kept refrigerated from the moment it's made to the moment it is either drunken or spoiled is just so disgustingly wasteful and ineficient. Just think ofall those refreigerated trucks, and all thegrocery stores with open-air freezers running 24/7, and not tomention all the milk thatjust gets tossed because its not bought in time.

are you sure that's not the sterilized milk mentioned earlier in this thread? I've never seen pasteurized milk with a sell by date farther out than a couple of weeks, maybe 3 on the outside. And that's with normal 3-4C refridgeration, much less squirreling a box of the stuff away in a 'dry and fairly cool place'.

I'd be willing to at least try milk that was shelf stable on cereal. I wonder if I could find it in the "ethnic foods" areas of a grocery store here.

Believe it or not, Ludd, we have other things in the fridge besides milk. Hard to imagine, huh?

                            Away?

I store my boxes of milk in a closet of my kitchen. The one where I put other long-conservation foods, such as pasta/rice and canned food.

Over here, it's called "pasteurisé". I expect the English translation to be "pasteurized"

And I was talking about bottles just for language convenience. Actually, milk is mostly stored in 1-litre containers that look like this:

Edit: actually, the kind of milk that's common here isn't only pasteurized, but also goes through "ultra high temperature" (UHT) at some point during conditioning. It's neither sterilization, nor it is pure pasteurization.

I tried powered milk decades ago. It was the foulest brew I have ever tasted.

I used to buy quarts of milk, but I couldn't even use them up quickly enuf.

Now I stir my cereal into low-fat yogurt. It makes a crunchy concoction and is quite delicious!
