From the OP his goal seems more to avoid having spoilt milk in his fridge rather than avoiding the shops.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

i still don't understand how you can't drink a gallon in 16 days...

If it was so easy, he'd just buy a smaller bottle of milk every time he goes to the grocer.

What happens when milk is frozen? I think my mum freezes milk, I'm not sure I've seen her thaw any though...
Huh? In a refrigerator it can stay good for at least two weeks.

The problem is in the OP they are saying it goes bad before the sell by date. Which is not true. The milk is still good.

While it is true the milk won't taste as good after a few days in the fridge, but then most opened foods don't taste as good after a few days in the fridge (though I recommend baking soda or something in the fridge to soak up the odors).

MILK LASTS TWO WEEKS! you can't drink a gallon in 2 weeks? 1 cup of milk a day in your cereal... 16 cups in a gallon. You can finish a gallon in 2 weeks off 1 cup of milk a day.

Me, by myself, I usually run through a gallon in 2-3 days.
sadly this is untrue. I'm not working off of guesswork here AS. On multiple occasions milk has gone unmistakably sour several days even a week before the sell by date. I'd gues the sell by date is only helpful until you open it.

it also gets ridiculously expensive the smaller the volume you buy. for instance 1 gallon is $1.99, half a gallon is $1.45 and a quart is $1.25 at the grocery store that sells it at the lowest price in my area.

it gains a strong sour odor. I pour a little in the sink and I can see tiny clumps in it. If I wait a day to see if I'm imagining things it gets truly repulsive and I can't even stand to go buy milk for a couple days after seeing that ****.

I didn't think powdered milk was bad on cereal, though I wouldn't drink it straight. You might want to consider organic skim milk. That stuff lasts for weeks . We drink very little milk, but we don't have to buy it that often because the stuff just won't go bad.

a week before the sell by date? That's impossible. Something has got to be wrong with your refrigerator.

I suppose it could be the fridge and the little alcohol thermometer I used to check it out. I'll see if I can scrounge up another thermometer or use that one to check a friends fridge for comparison.

                          Geronimo:

think about it logically... stores keep milk up to the sell by date. they keep their milk often in those open-faced refrigerator units. you think millions of people in America are buying this milk a week before sell by date and going home to find it curdled?

that doesn't happen. how could it be consistantly happening to you? maybe your refrigerator is turning off for long periods of time...

I have never seen that. Never.

Do you live with people? Are they leaving the milk out? Is something wrong with your refrigerator?

I have never seen clumps before the sell by date. Sometimes it won't tastes as fresh, but it has never gotten me sick. And I never drank any lumps.

This was back when I could drink milk. At the age of 25 I became lactose intolerant.

in a way I hope something *is* wrong with the fridge. that would be a more palatable fix for these problems. I suppose I was too quick to rule it out on the basis of a crude thermometer check.

logically opening a sealed product might be expected to have a profound effect on it's shelf life but I am nonetheless going to further explore the possibility that my fridge has a problem a bit more subtle than my earlier temperature check would detect.
