They used to have the brand Parmalat (italian) in the US, pasturized milk you could keep for a few months. I haven't seen it in a while.

Powdered milk is not bad per se, but it does taste differently from fresh milk, or what goes for fresh milk nowadays.

I thought Pamrmalat went under...interestingly enough they have introduced their Heavenly good Santal Red Orange juice to the North Europe as well. God Bless them and the Sicilian farmers for that.

ok, suppose nobody else in your home drank milk. How many days of your average rate of consumption would you need to finish half a gallon?

The taste of either is irrelevant, imo. You get used to and enjoy whatever you drink and will find that stuff you used to drink now tastes funny if you haven't had it for a while.

For your purposes though, UHT and the like aren't useful - they only have a long shelf life while they are not opened. Once opened their life is comparable to standard milk.

And how is that not useful?

Because his problem is milk expiring after it's been opened.

I used to use powdered milk when I went backpacking. Can't say it was to bad.

I'd have to go against the majority here too; I had the same problem with spoilage and just started buying 2lb boxes of powdered milk. I'll admit it's a tad less sweet than regular milk and would be terrible to drink as-is, it's so overwhelmed by the flavor of any cereal that you can't tell the difference. If you're only using it for cereal, powdered's the way to go.
                          Unbelievable!

Here's your problem. 4 pints is a very large container, and you'll need to drink a lot fast before it goes off. Sour milk is totally disgusting, and so is powdered milk.

You need to buy less fresh milk, more often. If you live a long way from the shop then try what we call 'UHT' (ultra-heat-treatment), which stays fresh in its sealed carton for weeks or more without refridgeration. Or, buy a cow and have fresh milk every day!

How are you keeping the milk long enough for it to spoil? I have a gallon in there purchased yesterday. The sell by date is June 25. It'll then be good for another 3 days or so...

MILK LASTS TWO WEEKS! you can't drink a gallon in 2 weeks? 1 cup of milk a day in your cereal... 16 cups in a gallon. You can finish a gallon in 2 weeks off 1 cup of milk a day.

Me, by myself, I usually run through a gallon in 2-3 days.

IIUC his purpose is to buy a large amount of milk once in a blue moon, and then to consume it slowly.

Considering that UHT milk is contained in small independent packs, that you can buy aplenty, I'd imagine it fits his purposes.
