Well we've had two games from the tournament seeds, and the Germans have to be the happier, but neither of them were very good. Hopefully the tournament will be wide open now.

The ref conformed to his reputation for oddness, but I'm glad that I didn't take up nufc.com on their tip that the smart money would be on that game as the first for a red card. But I was glad to see the linesman come on to make Joe Cole move back to ten yards when there was a free kick on the wing - that sort of thing should happen far more often.

I'll definitely want to see better play from England who were rather lacklustre. Then again, group play is usually dull. Germany weren't exactly stellar playing against a team with some non-pro's on it.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Agree 100% there, probably the 2nd best highlight of the match

It should, as it ought to be considered a 'dead' object (as is the referee btw).

I've just wasted the past 15 minutes watching Sweden vs Trinidad. What a boring match: the Trinidadians never build an offensive better than a hit - and - run, and the Swedes look like they're sleeping

No, there would be a drop-ball in the centre circle because, despite still being in play, the ball was dead - the same as if some moron in the crowd had run onto the pitch and kicked the ball.

Guess who was so obsessed with footie in his infant years that he even read the "You are the ref" columns in Shoot magazine.

                  ...footie ...

Please people, can't we call it by it's proper name, football?

When the ball hits the referee and then goes in goal, the goal will stand, so I'm not so sure that this one wouldn't.

Don't always go by the 'You are the Ref' column, the rules have changed. In those days if the ball hit the corner flag it was a throw-on. Not any more.

Well I could understand if you thought it was called footy instead, Hueij, but otherwise....
Maybe it's just a British thing. Although the Scots call it fitba.

Has anyone else seen those adverts for some kind of TV company (Samsung?) where the bloke has somehow won tickets to the final of an unnamed generic footie championship, but instead chooses to nick his boss' telly and leave the tickets as some kind of consideration? And his friends don't murder him, but instead praise him for his acuity!
I mean, if there was some kind of Logan's Run-style test for automatic footie fan genocide, then this guy would be front of the queue.

                          That was never a free-kick!

But the reason the ref can "score" is that he's part of the game - it is the players' responsibility to avoid him when passing, or whatever.

Wow - awesome stuff from T & T. Group B will now have to worry about them.

And in an upset, the Sweden-Trinidad&Tobago game results in a thrilling 0-0 draw. Ah, soccer....

And the first upset is there! Best match of the tournament so far if you like cheering for the underdog (which I do), worst one if you don't. That's why cheering for the underdog is so much fun!
