      • Another good game from group C. The two best games so far have been from this group IMO.

        • HA! We beat two countries in one match, I'd like to see anyone else copy THAT!

Good first half, crappy second one but considering the heat that's not too surprising. And the result is good so I'm not complaining

          • I didnt get to see too much cos I was working on a powerpoint presentation but I was listening with one ear. I did get to see the last ten minutes and saw some of the usual excellent Dutch diving (along with their good football skills). It never fails to amaze me how badly refs are fooled by it. Perhaps it's because they dont expect that level of skilled acting from a northern european team (as they would from the Italiens for example).

2nd half wasn't crappy, though Holland played less well, that might might explain your reaction. For this neutral it was compelling stuff.

These recent-ish WC winners you list are not rivals. By rivalry, I'm talking about the likes of Milan v Inter, Arsenal v Spurs, Liverpool v Man Utd, Real Madrid v Barca, Rangers v Celtic.

At international level, Holland have 1974 to remember Germany by, and England have countless penalty shootout nightmares. This is how Germany holds a special place in our affections. Same with England & Argentina - Supercheat Maradonna punches the ball into the net, (and uses cocaine to raise his performance). For this, we remember them forever, and this is what rivalry is.

France and Brazil are not rivals. Period.

As for the sweeping generalisations about English and Dutch people - well, I can't speak for the Dutch, but the vast majority of English fans are not seriously expecting anything better than the usual QF knockout on penalties. Having read 300-odd mostly-despairing posts on Englands disappointing performance yesterday on the BBC forum, it's fair to say that most fans here are not "arrogantly declaring themselves as favourite" at all.

Of course, if you refuse to allow some individuals a bit of pre-tournament optimism, then what can I say?

Yes, Argentina are widely respected for their technical ability, even by their bitter rivals.

His other goal that day was phenomenal.

And since when has cocaine been seen as a performance enhancer? After all, you crash, unlike with real performance enhancers.

                      • Cocaine has never been a performance enhancer. Maradonna used it because he was a junk.

                        • OMG the constant chatter from Dave O'Brien is driving me crazy already. He never shuts up! It would be OK if it wasnt just inane trivialities, gossip, political comment, and totally unnecessary 'play-by-play'.

I wonder if I can get another sound transmission from the web?

                          • If it's any consolation, that's not a problem solely with American commentators. Ours have been ruining games for years with their endless, nonsensical blabberings.

This is just one of the many frustrating "qualities" which made it so easy for me to give up on TV.

I've seen enhanced physical and mental performances from cocaine, planty of times. Two 45-minute hits could definately enhance performance for the duration of a match. Football, like most sports is affected by confidence, and cocaine will give both extra confidence and temporary extra strength and stamina.

That Goal was super-human. It was scored by an outstanding player, but with something a bit extra. A bit extra up the nose, in my opinion.
