Don't pity me, I don't pity myself and I don't think anyone else I know does either. I want to say that those higher standards are empty things that people chase because society is diseased. It's our natural drive gone wrong on a scale that we were never designed to handle.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

I don't think we were designed for anything in specific except survival.

And in a world of survival of the fittest, I doubt very much that being at the top of the totem pole is something we should not aim for.

Dude you're addicted to buying electronic devices and you talk about the car your daddy bought with oil money. That's just a ****ty attitude, you know it.

          I'm a technology geek, I don't see why that's a ****ty attitude.

What is a ****ty attitude is chastizing people for aiming high with their life or their love for gadgets.

I can see why College Professor is high on the list. My job is zero stress, and I get to do whatever the hell I want.

I have 6 hours a week of teaching, and the rest of the time is mine to do as I please.

My job is rather tedious. Each morning people come into my office and tell me what a great guy I am. They pour buckets of money and checks upon my desk. It takes until noon to count it, and sometime I have get my brother to help carry it to the bank. All very dull, I can tell you.

There is a swedish expression, jantelagen, a mentality that noone should think they are better than another and that everyone must be equal. Jantelagen is the description of that phenomenon as an integral part of the culture of this land, something that finds its way into the very marrow of the people.

But no I don't think that is what I wanted to say, you can become the president of Canada or whatever for all I care. But people are doing just what you are saying, always aiming higher with things, but they never get the high score and win the game.

It replaces what that drive was really for in the first place, the flame of survival. That's what I meant with people having created something that we were never meant to take part in.

Isn't Sweden one of the most depressed countries?

Er, I don't think you've quite gotten the hang of this one. First, its origin is Danish-Norwegian, by an author named Aksel Sandemose. Second, it is not a concept to be idealised or aspired to, but rather it's a characterization of the widespread expectation in certain social circles for people to never rise above mediocrity, prejudice and ignorance. Orwell would've loved it. Or not..
