They do spend big market money... unfortunately, they are just spending it on the wrong people. While D. Lee being injured doesn't help, that's no excuse for the rest of the team to roll over and play dead... They are also one of the worst "fundamental" teams in baseball.
Dusty keeps promising every year that it will be different... and it just doesn't change.

I've never seen so much BIG MARKET money being wasted so well.

    Go White Sox

    • Dusty is a loser. Time to get a new manager.

      • That's what I meant. They have money, and occasionally even use it. But they tend to spend it poorly, and/or simply get unlucky (Mark Prior - CV not long ago is that he shouldn't be as injury-prone as most pitchers due to "near perfect" mechanics).

        Go White Sox
        Woah, is that allowed?

        • I just went to see Padres vs. Cubs at Petco Park in San Diego on Friday night. First of all I could not believe the number of Cubs fans there. They were mostly young, so I guess they were college students. They cheered louder than Padres fans on more than one occasion. The Cubs fans were really obnoxious, too. A number of times there were guys in the aisles, drunk, trying to get Cubs cheers going and antagonizing Padres fans..

I'm in town visiting from PA. The Phillies fans were never this bad.. Yeah go ahead and talk about booing Santa - that was 35 years ago. I'm talking about Phils fans dont go into another park and antagonize the home teams fans....

          • I've always wondered what the fans of the hometown team think when most of the crowd is clearly rooting for the visitor. This happens a lot in Tampa and Baltimore (and can happen in Toronto too) when the Yankees or Red Sox visit.

Personally, I would cheer my team, but I do consider it rude to strike up a Let's Go Yankees chant in the opposition's stadium.

Many people would agree with that

But being an old fart, I enjoyed baseball in this city long before interleague play. I went to both parks... and never really had to worry about picking one team over the other since the only way they would ever meet in a meaningful game would be if they both made the WS (yeah... right)

I do root for the Cubs over the Sox when they play... but I love both teams. And there have been many summers when both teams sucked, so I don't really care now as long as one of them is competitive. If they both are, so much better.

              The Cubs still suck...

              • Chicago is just wierd .

In the NY metropolitan area, it was impossible to root for BOTH the Mets and Yankees. Just frowned upon in every sector, even if you were a kid it was assumed your parents didn't raise you right .

                • Heh. Now, truth be told, I have a warm spot in my heart for the Mets. My little league team was called the Mets. I even rooted for 'em as a little kid, 'cause my mom got tickets to Shea from her company occasionally.

For the most part, the Mets just aren't on my radar. I mean, sure, there is interleague play (I still don't like it, FFIW) but it's only 6 games/year. It's nothing compared to the 19 vs. the Red Sox.

Besides, Santa was an Eagles game. There was some article about Phillies fans prior to the Barry Bonds... err, I mean "San Franciso Giants" series talking about how bad Phillies fans were, and they cited incidents from three different Eagles games to back up the assertion.

Anyway, I'm glad the Bonds series is over. Nothing like having the Phils' longest winning streak since 1991 overshadowed by one homerun. I liked the picture of the fan in the Juicy Juice outfit... "100% Roids".

Of course that circus leaves town, and now we get the Mets and Billy Whiner coming in.

                    • Imran, I am a more typical (ex-) Chicagoan. I root for only one team, the Sox. I've been following them closely since '59, the year they were in the Series, but lost. There is something about having a good team that makes you a fan.

Which is why I have always wondered about Chicago Cub fans. They gotta be fans for some other reason than liking a quality baseball team.

I think Chicago's allegiences is more about the city. People born on the North Side (including all its suburbs to the North (I lived in Waukegan, for example) generally favor the Cubs. People who were born on the South Side, favor the Sox.

While I lived in the Northern 'burbs, I was born on the South Side.

Glad to hear that at least one Chicagoan here at Poly sticks to one team
