  • Btw, just wanted to say, Carlos Beltran . He is justifying his salary this year, after getting settled in NY. OBP of .389 (second on the Mets to David Wright). SLG of .604 (highest on the Mets). His 14 HRs almost match his 16 of a year ago. Even though steals don't add all that much, he's got 7 of 'em with only 2 times caught stealing. The speed helps around the basepaths though and he's got Gold Glove defense in center.

What looked like sever overpaying a year back now looks pretty damned good.

Sounds like karma is biting him in the ass. He was part of the Phillies-Cardinals mid-season trade a few years back that sent him and two other journeymen to the Phils in exchange for Scott Rolen. Upon his arrival in Philly he declared that he would not sign with the Phils in the offseason under any circumstances.. He then proceeded to pitch like crap for the two months he was a Phillie..

I think it's pretty clear that he's better than he showed last year. Just like it's clear that he's not as good as he played in the playoffs a couple years ago. Ultimately, he's a damned good player and one you want on your team. The Yanks would've done well to sign him. But no, we had to have Glass Carl and Jaret "I had one good year in Atlanta" Wright.

        • The Yankee M.A.S.H. operation continues. ARod and Giambi have been too sick to play. Jeter hit on the hand, x-rays thankfully negative. Mo still unavailable (Chien-Ming Wang gets a save, oh my).

Meanwhile, in the face of all evidence, the Yankees continue to employ Terrance Long, Scott "The Run Fairy" Erickson and Aaron "one year fluke" Small.

Red Sox incoming. I'll be happy with a split.

          • Nice to see Becket get smacked around. Plus, the replacements continue to play well (Phillips in particular).

'twas an odd game. From the bizzare little-league-esq play on which Melky scored from first on a wild pitch/throwing error/positional wierdness due to Giambi shift, to the nubber in front of the plate that was a double play and then wasn't, to the fact that Torre brought in Scott Proctor (and Mariano, but that one made some sense) to protect an 8-run lead.

            • What a pounding... The Eastern Seaboard Network was drooling over this match up, with many kissing off New York because of their injuries...

              • Oh dear. You're one of those whiny types who cares what ESPN shows as their game of the week?

They follow the money. There are a lot of Yanks & Red Sox fans.

As for the injuries... as a Yankee fan I don't expect anyone to cry for my team. But I do take some pride in the fact that with major stars out, others have stepped up and performed.

Nahhhh.... I have no problem with their game selection. Hell, that's the game I would be interested in beyond following the Cubs and White Sox...

But I am whiny when it comes to their East Coast Bias in ALL things. It's tough listening to them sometimes, because they have their heads so far up the asses of east coast teams... ignoring better stories, better teams, and better players just because they don't happen to play on the East Coast

                  • edit: damn, no crying smilie.

Anyway, I don't bother with ESPN much so for all I know you're right. Of course, the more fans your team has, the more likely ESPN is to pay attention to that team (money talks, baby).

My main issue with ESPN is that they employ Joe Morgan as an analyist. Or is that Fox?

Being in the media business... I can't argue that.

I will admit I enjoy the World Series last year and listening to ESPN have to say that indeed the White Sox were the best team... especially after listening to a couple of weeks of their east coast BS when they weren't even giving the White Sox a chance of winning.

                      • A lot of folks were wrong* about the White Sox, including many who aren't from the east coast. I'd be basking in the glow too, where I a ChiSox fan.

                        * - I still think that the WS may have played a tad over their heads last year, but even so they were an excellent team and the best of the bunch. Deserving champs. Nice to see pitching and defense do its thing (even if it had the unfortunate side effect of bolstering silly "small ball" arguments).

That's ESPN. Is he horrible or what? Then again, FOX has the equally terrible Tim McCarver, so I guess it's a toss up as to which is more painful to watch.

                          • Joe Morgan is so awful there is a blog dedicated to his awfulness. He was a great player. He's a terrrible analyst.

ESPN also employs John Kruk to "analyze" things. The man is a total moron.

                            • Terrance Long has been sent back to Columbus! Yes!

Now I'll grant that Nick Green also sucks, but he's merely a stop-gap body who will be on the team only so long as Jeter's thumb hurts. The key here is that Kevin Thompson remains on the team over Long. THAT was the proper decision, but one that we Yankees fans weren't sure the team would make. *phew*

Next up: Scott Erickson. Pack your bags, old man.
