  • Wow, has Loretta been that bad? He started well...

Ok, maybe San Diego knew what they were doing. Then again, it's early yet.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

    • The Yankees counter with

      Johnny Damon .312 .400 .505 (.905)
      Derek Jeter .398 .505 .648 (1.152)
      Jason Giambi .344 .554 .852 (1.407)
      Alex Rodriguez .267 .390 .477 (.867)
      Hideki Matsui .258 .340 .427 (.767)
      Jorge Posada .288 .395 .452 (.847)
      Robinson Cano .316 .341 .443 (.785)
      Andy Phillips .154 .214 .269 (.484)
Bernie Williams .217 .262 .283 (.545). Please, make it stop.

      Day-to-day:
      Gary Sheffield .341 .390 .516 (.906)

How ABOUT that back end of the order, eh? Sheff being out really hurts (just as Coco being out hurts the Sox).

        • Ok, but not very good. If he gets good defense, he's a pretty good pitcher. But the Yankee defense isn't very good. Once the "d" fails him, he tends to unravel. Jeter made a terrible error (booted a sure DP grounder, everybody safe) in his first start out in Oakland and Wang just couldn't recover.

His control has been off. He's walked too many guys.

Wow, did you come up with that all by yourself?

I'm pleased with the product thus far, actually. Some flukey stuff has happened that I expect will even out over the course of the season. The Yankees have given up fewer runs/game than the Sox, and scored many more. As they should

                  • I think the Red Sox have thought Wells was done all along, and proceeded accordingly.

Given the above, however, the question is what to do with Papelbon. He's been phenomenal as a closer, but I think he's a pretty darned good starter too, and ultimately isn't a good starter > a good, or even great reliever?

Your top 3 is solid. Your #4 is shaky but not too bad (Clement). If you slide him down to #5 and stick Papelbon in, it seems to me that Boston's rotation is pretty nasty.

Of course, that weakens the bullpen. But that can probably be fixed for less than finding another starter...

                    • actually, since we're going to have clemens as are #1, everyone moves down one more spot

then we would have wakefield in the bullpen, im not sure about that, he gives up homeruns like candy.

                      • What? Why would Wakefield be in the bullpen?

                        Shilling
                        Beckett
                        Wakefield
                        Papelbon
                        Clement

                        That's 5 starters. Am I missing someone?

Predicting the score of any one baseball game is a fool's game, but since I'm feeling foolish:

                                Yankees 6, Red Sox 4.
