ok so heres the medical news..
the endocrinologist says there is some damage to my pancreas.
as i understand it from the extended months of high blood sugar.
it may heal itself over time and i might not have to be on insulin forever.
he changed the glucose lowering medicine i was on to another.
saying the one they put me on isn't right for me. would make me
gain weight over time. then he also added another insulin for me to
take with meals. I'm to sample my blood 4 times a day.
i learned to use a real syringe today. they are going to give me my insulin free
for a while. every meal i have to calculate carbohydrate intake and inject
1 unit of insulin for every 10 grams of carb in the meal. and in addition to that
add an additional unit per every 30 points my sugar is above 130.
so for dinner tonight i had to take 6 units. it sounds like a pain in the butt
and it is... lol
i have to continue the other insulin at night and he raised that one to 25 units.
that will get raised every three days till I'm near my target of 130.
the nurse told me that the reason i was having symptoms of high and low
blood sugar is due to the rapid up and down cycles ..
some good news.. he will do the biopsy himself. so i don't have to go
to the hospital.. its set for march 9. he gave me a complete physical. head to toe.
felt of the thyroid nodules and he believes they are non toxic which is not cancer.
but to be sure.. he will do the biopsy. i guess an expert can tell things with his hands and fingers. he read my chart through and through.. asked me a lot of questions.
hes a great doctor.. never acts in a hurry.. treats you like your the only one he has to see that day. of course he charges out the ass too... this one visit was over 200.
but totally worth every penny. i feel so relieved and confident in him. a rare thing
for me to feel about a doctor.
thanks for all your good thoughts and prayers
ill let you all know what happens with the biopsy in march. and what they decide to do about it."If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." -Katherine Hepburn

This is SUCH awesome news, boann!!!
I'm so glad to hear things look manageable. A major change in lifestyle and all, but still... And I know the relief from the mental burden alone must be the best short-term benefit. I can just feel the "whew" in your tone. Also, thrilled to hear you found a doc who knows his stuff and that you feel you can trust. That is HUGE!!
So, keep us informed, kid. Now relax and have a nice weekend!Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

That would be awesome if you didn't have to keep taking the insulin.
Glad to also hear that the doc thinks the nodes are benign.

Holy ****!!!!!!!!!
I get mine free every time, and doubt I'd still be alive if I had to pay the market price for it. Will your health insurance cover this?
It's a pain in the butt to have to inject in the butt, but since I've been sick every time I've tried to inject in my stomach then I've stuck to my thighs (alternating with my calves, against medical advice, every so often - I change sites when my legs become too swollen but that generally takes a couple of years and goes away) and my upper arms. Mind you, I have to give 4 injections a day (it was only two when I was first diagnosed, but I really love the freedom that 4 gives me) so I'm totally used to it now.
I'm sure you'll become used to it too - just remember to count your carbs and to eat and inject regularly, ideally at the same times each day, at least for the first few years.

some good news for ya boann
sucks abotu all the work ya have to do just to have a meal. I am sure since you are newly diagnosed that they will get a normal pattern of your sugar levels and adjust ur insulin accordingly some diabetics can run hi sugars and that is normal for them.
If one thign i can add since you ar enew to this is to be careful and clean the injection sites well and to becareful when injuries have occured diabetics have a tendancy to heal very poorly after what can even seem a minor injury.
If you ever want to talk u can pm i work surgery and a lot of our patients are diabetics with sugars that can get out of control.
Keep the faith girl you got a lot of friends here that are with ya in mind and spiritWhen you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

duke .. i don't have any insurance. so all this is coming out of my small savings.. and monthly widows benefit.
i have no idea how i will pay for surgery if i need that.
or if it is cancer and i need other kinds of treatments.
im just taking it one day at a time.
thanks mrs t and all of you that offer advise.. i sure appreciate any thoughts since all this is very new to me."If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." -Katherine Hepburn

Boann if your procedure for the thyroid and diabetes are being done in a hospital check into the social workers. They can assist you to programs that can help you find ways to help pay for this expensive treatment. I know for a fact most hospitals have some type of clinic like situation that helps diabetics with supplies and insulin. In certain circumstances these social workers can get patients in your standing medicaid. not medicare but medicaid. There is a difference in the two. The hospitals down here did help my ex father in law when he was diagonsed with lekeumia. When you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

She's right there are places out there that will assist and don't sweat the biopsy. Uncomfortable like I said similar to the way a pelvic is uncomfortable, but managable and last all of about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes if that. You can do anything for about a minute And your right they are pretty good at feeling the lumpy bumpy's and tell if they are anything to worry about.
